When you think about it, the Queen giving out royal honours on her birthday is a bit like throwing a party for yourself and giving your guests the presents. Not that we don't want one, of course...

A whole host of famous faces and inspirational people were included in the 2019 birthday honours list yesterday (June 7), including Emmerdale's longest-serving cast member Chris Chittell.

The actor, who has been playing Eric Pollard on the soap for over 30 years, is being awarded a British Empire Medal, adding a BEM to his name.

The medal is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown, and speaking about the recognition, Chittell said: "When I first heard I would be receiving this honour I couldn't quite believe it.

"Then I thought of the hundreds of people I have met along the way who give up their time for others and are not set to receive an accolade, so I share this with them.

"I am overwhelmed I've been given this for my drama and charity work."

In the soap, Pollard has recently been involved in a shock car crash that left him fighting for his life, but he's now all mended up and currently berating David Metcalfe for his handling of the Maya Stepney/Jacob Gallagher situation and for getting back with Leyla Harding.

Emmerdale currently airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
