Joe's elaborate ruse was part of a plan to get his revenge on former stepmum Charity Dingle for the suicide of his dad Chris Tate, but if any Emmerdale fans are hoping that Joe Tate's return will pave the way for the return of more Tates, then it looks like you're better off not holding your breath.
During a Twitter Q&A with Joe Tate actor Ned Porteous and his co-star Andrew Scarborough (who plays Graham Foster on the soap), Digital Spy asked if the stars would like to see more classic Tate characters return – but it looks like Ned is enjoying being the only one for now.
"There's only room in this town for one Tate!" he replied.
As much as we're all enjoying Joseph Tate's revenge plot, the news is just a little disappointing for those fans who were hoping that legendary character Kim Tate would return too.
Soon after the big Joseph Tate reveal, fans shared their hope of a Kim Tate return on social media – and the fact that actress Claire King recently teased that she could return to Emmerdale after she left her Coronation Street role as Eric Holroyd helped fuel the rumours too.
"It's one of those things, isn't it?" she hinted. "I think the rumours started because the family in Emmerdale are moving out and I happen to be leaving Corrie at the same time.
"People have put two and two together I guess – but I will say this, the door to Emmerdale is not locked. So never say never!"
Even so, considering Ned's reply here, it looks like Joseph Tate will be the only character representing the iconic soap family in the 'Dales.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
