Emmerdale star Ned Porteous has teased more dark twists ahead for his villainous character Joe Tate.

The ITV soap recently stunned fans with the revelation that the mysterious "Tom Waterhouse" is actually Joseph Tate – the former stepson of Charity Dingle.

As his revenge storyline continues to unravel, spoilers for next week have revealed that Joe will find himself in a very perilous situation when he's confronted by a masked gunman.

However, Ned reckons there is someone else his alter ego should be wary of – his right hand man Graham Foster.

"Graham is to be equally feared and respected," Ned said to the Radio Times. "Joe knows him very well and what he's capable of, but they also mean a lot to each other.

"As much as they fight, they will ultimately want to stick together, but the issue will be their contrasting views on how things should be done. Graham is a moral compass for Joe, he doesn't always agree with the way Joe goes about doing things. But they are indebted to each other in various ways, which will come out soon.

"There's a lot more to come. There are many layers between them, they have known each other so long it surpasses just being a business relationship. "

However, Ned was keeping tight-lipped on whether it's really the end for Joe's romance with Debbie Dingle – who has been left broken-hearted by his lies.

Viewers know that Joe has come to the village to make Charity's life a misery, meaning his relationship with Debbie was only ever a sick game that he was playing.

When asked if there could be a way back for the pair, Ned said: "Never say never. Joe admires Debbie in terms of her strength and determination – whether there's still a romantic attachment we'll just have to keep watching…

"To have a chance to work more with Charley Webb would be great, but in terms of the plot I'm not sure. Playing Charley's enemy is just as [good as] playing her friend, so I'm happy either way!"

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
