Emmerdale stars say on-screen sex scene was banned

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale stars Emma Atkins and Lawrence Robb have revealed how an on-screen sex scene they filmed was banned from the soap for being too "raunchy".

Appearing on Loose Women on Thursday (April 20), Atkins, who plays Charity Dingle, and Robb, who plays Mackenzie Boyd, said the scene didn't pass compliance for a pre-watershed time slot.

In recent scenes, Charity and Mackenzie headed out for a night of fun ahead of their wedding day in a replica A-Team van.

After parking up on a quiet country road, things heated up between the pair who were then interrupted by PC Swirling.

During filming, the stars revealed that a sex scene in which the outside of the van was shown to be vigorously rocking was deemed too risqué and needed to be re-shot.

"You were doing a rather raunchy scene for soap opera, pre-watershed, and you were pretending to do jiggy-jigs in the back of a van and the van was rocking so much they can't show it?" asked host Denise Welch.

To film the scene, Atkins and Lawrence said they were asked to jump around in the back of the van along with the van's owner to make it rock.

"So the guy who owned the van, he was shaking it. We all got told to just shake the van so then we went for it," Atkins said while her co-star imitated the shaking motions.

However, after the scene was filmed, and despite it not showing either of the actors, they were told to re-shoot it from a wider angle where the van can be seen in the distance: "The director came over and went: 'Compliance have said no'. So they had to do a huge wide shot from the field."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
