Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Cain Dingle crosses the line again tonight (May 16) as his bitter rift with his mum Faith continues.

Cain has spent the past few days berating Faith for sleeping with his work colleague Dan Spencer. He's unaware that Faith currently needs the support of her family as her breast cancer has returned.

In Monday's episode, Faith continues to confide in her daughter-in-law Moira about how she's feeling. Moira is the only person who currently knows the truth.

Faith is adamant that she doesn't want to tell the rest of the Dingles about her illness just yet. She hopes to repair their fractured relationships naturally, rather than because the family feel obliged to.

However, a tense exchange with Cain at The Woolpack soon shows that this may be a long way off.

As Cain confronts Faith yet again, she tries to smooth the waters with an attempt to make amends.

Cain responds with an upsetting comment as he cruelly wishes death on Faith. Moira watches on in horror, knowing that Cain wouldn't be behaving like this if he knew the truth.

Sally Dexter, who plays Faith, recently explained: "Moira now knows the truth and wants everybody to be told about it, which is the last thing Faith wants to do. Faith fears that, if she lets Cain and Chas know, Cain in particular will pity her but still despise her.

"Faith thinks there's no chance that they could have a proper, honest mother-and-son relationship without it being tinged with the question of: 'Is Cain just being guilt-ridden and responding to Faith out of guilt, rather than because he loves her?'

"Would he be responding to her as a mother or responding to the cancer?"

She added: "Faith tries very hard to convince Moira that it's not right for her to be the person to tell anybody else. It's Faith's choice what she does. They have quite a few conversations about that.

"Faith believes she knows what's best for her, and it's having control over your life in that way. If you can't control the cancer, at least you can control the choices that you make.

"This becomes a fundamental and ever-growing thought in Faith's mind – that she wants to take control."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
