Emmerdale's Laurel Thomas makes a mortifying mistake next week as she kisses her ex Marlon Dingle.

Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) crosses the line while seeking comfort from Marlon after another upsetting visit to her husband Ashley.

Ashley is now in full-time care due to his dementia and although he's doing well there, there's heartbreak in store for Laurel when he starts to forget her completely.

When Laurel makes one particular visit, Ashley makes it very clear that he doesn't remember her and that he's now growing closer to another patient called Maggie.

Marlon (Mark Charnock) tries to cheer Laurel up when she returns home to the village, but her response is very unexpected as she suddenly moves in and kisses him.

The surprise moment is witnessed by Ashley's very unimpressed father Sandy, who gives Laurel the cold shoulder in the aftermath.

Marlon also has to come clean with his current girlfriend Carly Hope about what happened, leaving her with second thoughts over plans they've made to move in together.

Laurel hopes to talk Carly round when they next cross paths during a girly party in the village, but has the damage already been done?

Discussing the future of the Ashley storyline, Emmerdale boss Iain MacLeod recently revealed: "Ashley's exit story is not that far off. It's tragic to say it, but he will soon be no longer with us.

"I've just signed off on the final version of the episode in which he dies and it is unbelievably beautiful. It's oddly joyous and it's a celebration of the character.

"We didn't want to do a story where he just absconded from a care home and was discovered dead from hypothermia or something - it would be too bleak.

"In a story that is already desperately sad, what we wanted to do was make this the best possible death – so that coming out of the other side of it, his family members would think: 'Well, none of us wanted him to go so soon, but knowing that he had to go, these were the best circumstances for his death'.

"It's super warm and funny – and almost festive and boisterous. It's just beautiful and I couldn't be more proud of the script, which is in very capable hands with our cast and crew."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
