Emmerdale's Laurel Thomas makes a big decision over Arthur and Marshall

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Laurel Thomas will make a big decision on Emmerdale soon, with the decision set to have implications on both Arthur and Marshall.

The schoolmates have been wrestling over their feelings for each other in recent weeks, but a wedge was driven between the pair after Colin expressed homophobic views and ordered his son to attend boarding school.

In episodes that air next week, Laurel finds out about Marshall's secret, and offers to speak to his dad in order to call out his bigoted views. Marshall, however, begins to sob uncontrollably, leading Laurel to realise that he's going through more than just teenage rebellion.

Colin then strides over, with both Marshall and Laurel fearing the worst, but he shows a softer side as he hugs his tearful son. He admits that he was too quick to judge Arthur, and informs Marshall that he can stay at Hotten Academy.

Laurel is initially happy at the thought of Colin appearing to change his ways, but Arthur informs her that not everything is as it seems with him. She's left wondering if she did the right thing, with Jai subsequently attempting to comfort her.

Arthur later informs both Laurel and Jai that Marshall's relationship with Colin is on thin ice, leading Laurel to head out – but what exactly does she have planned?

Arthur and Marshall's touching story has won many plaudits so far, and executive producer Jane Hudson revealed she was proud of what her team produced.

"It's been such a lovely story and I'm so proud of Alfie [Clarke], who plays Arthur. He's done it so brilliantly," she said. "It's not just a story about coming out as gay. It's a story about teenage love and teenage angst. I think we all remember when we first broke up and we thought: 'Oh, I'm never going to find love again!'"

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
