The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards will soon announce their nominees.

But which of your favourite actors and shows will get the nod?

The official nominations are due to be announced on 14 July 2016, when we’ll finally find out whether or not ‘Game of Thrones’ is in the running for Best Drama. But until then, we’re left to ponder which of our favourite US TV shows will be in with a chance.

- Chris Evans’ Top Gear Screen Time Cut
- Why You Should Catch Up On Orange Is The New Black

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and coming in September 2016, the Primetime Emmys are the TV awards everybody wants to win. And with a bumper year of incredible television, it could be a tricky one to predict.

But we’re going to give it a go, anyway.

Outstanding Drama Series

Last Year’s Winner: Game of Thrones

I can’t help thinking it’s going to be another great year for ‘Game of Thrones’. Its growing fan base is always desperate to find out what happens in Westeros from one week to the next. Not to mention, it bagged the top award at last year’s Emmys.

But it’s not the only contender.

Another HBO series, ‘The Leftovers’, really came into its own this year. It may have seen a dramatic drop in viewership, but ‘The Leftovers’ found its peak when it comes to critical response. In fact, many TV critics added it to their top 10 TV shows of the year.

Will it manage to topple ‘Game of Thrones’ off the top spot? Unfortunately, that’s unlikely… but it may well earn its place among the nominees.

‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Homeland’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’ are also likely candidates for a nomination, with ‘Better Call Saul’ continuing to impress ‘Breaking Bad’ fans.

Predicted Winner: Game of Thrones

Outstanding Comedy Series

Last Year’s Winner: Veep

Once again, it looks as though last year’s winner is in with a shot. That’s right, ‘Veep’ is already pulling ahead as the frontrunner in this category. Season 5 received enormous critical acclaim, which includes a whopping 88 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Its ‘refreshing approach to D.C. politics’ is a likely reason for the show’s success. But as always, there’s plenty of competition.

‘Brooklyn Nine Nine’ is a personal favourite, and could find itself in contention this year. And then there’s ‘The Last Man on Earth’ – a uniquely nihilistic comedy starring Will Forte. ‘Modern Family’ is likely to be back… and if it does win, that would make it the most awarded comedy show in US history.

‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ also seems like a sure bet, for a nomination at least… and finally, I can’t help thinking ‘Transparent’ will also be back.

Predicted Winner: Modern Family

Outstanding Limited Series

Last Year’s Winner: Olive Kitteridge

Another strong category, there’s plenty of innovative shows to consider this year… but perhaps most obviously, ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story’. After all, it’s the one which has kept most folks on the edge of their seats.

image

‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ also looks likely to bag a nomination, with all of the show’s previous seasons receiving a nod in this category. Sadly, it’s never quite managed to get the gong.

Then there’s ‘Fargo’ which brought big names such as Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst and Patrick Wilson for its second series. It also happens to have been bloody good, too.

Also likely to appear in this category are ‘American Crime’ as well as ‘The Night Manager’ and ‘The Girlfriend Experience’.

But when it comes to the winner, I can’t help feeling this is going to be a difficult one to call… and while I want to say ‘Fargo’ will clinch it, it’s more likely to go to the more sensational show on the list.

Predicted Winner: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Last Year’s Winner: Jon Hamm for Mad Men

Let’s face it – Bob Odenkirk is likely to get a nod for ‘Better Call Saul’ and for good reason. He was nominated last year, too… and snagged a Screen Actor’s Guild award for the same character during his run on ‘Breaking Bad’.

Other likely contenders?

Well, it’s a rich field… and I’d personally love to see ‘The Leftovers’ star Justin Theroux get the award. After all, he had a spectacularly diverse run on the show’s second season, which really showcased the acting prowess of its truly incredible cast.

And Justin Theroux continued to prove his acting chops.

Mathew Rees could finally get the nod for ‘The Americans’, and then there’s Rami Malek from ‘Mr. Robot’ – a show which really pushed its star’s acting talent. Terrence Howard is of course one of the main reasons people love ‘Empire’ and that could push him towards the award. And what about Bobby Cannavale in ‘Vinyl’? All solid performances…

Predicted Winner: Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Last Year’s Winner: Viola Davis for How To Get Away With Murder

Almost all of last year’s nominees are eligible for another round… and that means huge competition for Lead Actress this year. But the obvious choice is Claire Danes, whose run on ‘Homeland’ continues to keep her on top of her game.

Of course, last year’s winner Viola Davis is also a strong contender, as well as ‘House of Cards’ star Robin Wright, who has received three nominations for the show so far.

Does this mean the category is going a bit stale?

image

Not exactly… and with Krysten Ritter blowing audiences away as ‘Jessica Jones’, I can’t help thinking her dry, snarky wit might get her more than just a nomination. ‘Orphan Black’ star Tatiana Maslany could also be in the running.

Finally, there’s my personal favourite Carrie Coon, who continues to impress on HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’. But as much as I really want her to nab this one, I get the feeling the award will be going elsewhere.

Predicted Winner: Krysten Ritter

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Last Year’s Winner: Jeffrey Tambour for Transparent

I can’t help thinking that Jeffrey Tambour – still eligible for the award this year – is going to be the one to clinch it this time around, too. Accepting the award with a rousing speech and a win for LGBT folks everywhere, it could be yet-another triumph if he manages to clinch it again this year.

image

And let’s face it – competition is, once again, pretty light.

Four of last year’s nominees are also eligible for this year’s award, including Matt LeBlanc for ‘Episodes’, William H. Macey for ‘Shameless’, Will Forte for ‘The Last Man on Earth’ and Don Cheadle for ‘House of Lies’.

Will any of them get close? I’m not so sure… but we could find T.J Miller as a serious contender for his appearance in ‘Silicon Valley’.

Predicted Winner: Jeffrey Tambour

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Last Year’s Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep

Let’s face it – Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won every year since ‘Veep’ appeared on TV screens, with a colossal four consecutive wins in this category. Of course, ‘Veep’ also managed to get the big one last year… but can the winning streak continue?

image

After three of her former contenders became ineligible this year, it looks as though she may face some fresh faces. But I’d love to see ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ star Kaitlin Olson finally get some recognition for the show.

Other contenders for a nomination include ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ star Rachel Bloom, Gina Rodriguez from ‘Jane The Virgin’, as well as Lily Tomlin for ‘Grace and Frankie’ and Ellie Kemper from ‘Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt’.

But I get the feeling it’s just a race to see who will lose to Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Predicted Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
