Emmys 2019 best dressed: colour-blocking rules the red carpet

It's the small screen's biggest night and the sartorial stakes are always high.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards took place at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre on Sunday night and Hollywood's elite were sure to bring their style A-game.

With the cast of Fleabag, Killing Eve, Pose and Game of Thrones all up for gongs, it was a particularly chic night, with one colour combination in particular ruling the style roost: pink and red.

The colourway found its way onto Mandy Moore, who chose Eighties inspired Brandon Maxwell, and who appeared to be twinning with her This Is Us co-star Susan Kelechi Watson, who had also received the colourblocking memo, wearing a fabulous puff-sleeved gown by Christian Siriano.

Taraji P. Henson followed suit in a dramatic Vera Wang gown in the same hue, while Marisa Tomei furthered the 'Who Wore It Best?' competition, opting for a Ralph & Russo number.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, actors from the biggest shows of the night, Game of Thrones — which took home 12 awards, breaking its own 2015 records for the most awards given to a series, and Fleabag, which took home four — dressed to fit the stars they've all become.

GoT's Emilia Clarke opted for a navy Valentino Haute Couture, a dress which is the chicest take on a pinafore we've ever seen and Gwendoline Christie sparked thousands of memes with a seriously theatrical Gucci gown.

While Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who won the coveted award for lead actress in a comedy series, looked every inch the Emmy-winner in Monique Lhuillier.

And what would a red carpet be without a political statement? Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox used her moment on the carpet to make a dig at Donald Trump. The actor sported an Edie Parker clutch which read "Oct. 8" "Title VII" and "Supreme Court", referring to the Trump administration's briefing on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which would make anti-gay discrimination legal in the workplace (the case is set to go to the Supreme Court on October 8.)
