Emmys 2019: The biggest snubs from this year's nominations, from George Clooney to Julia Roberts

The 2019 Emmy nominations are in, and they're bringing in a fresh crop of snubs and surprises.

The Good Place star D'Arcy Carden and actor Ken Jeong unveiled the list of nominees on Tuesday morning.

Some shows, such as Game of Thrones, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Veep were expected to be commanded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – and they did land several prominent nominations.

Others, however, didn't get the attention they were expected to receive. Julia Roberts was an Emmy favourite for her role in Amazon Prime's Homecoming but didn't earn a nomination.

The actor made light of the situation on social media, where she pointed out she was "in exceptional company" – namely George Clooney and Emma Stone, who were expected to receive nominations for Catch-22 and Maniac respectively but were snubbed.

Also among this year's snub is Andrew Scott's performance as the priest in the second season of Fleabag, which turned his character into a social media sensation.

Richard Madden, meanwhile, missed out on a nomination for his leading role in Bodyguard, though the show did get nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.

The Big Bang Theory, which wrapped up in May after 12 seasons, is notably absent from the major nomination categories. Jim Parsons, who has won four Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, dropped out of this year's list.

GLOW, meanwhile, was a strong candidate for a nomination in the Outstanding Comedy Series category after a well-received second season but didn't make the cut.

Likewise, Jane The Virgin, with a solid fan following, would have been a valuable pick but is absent from this year's crop of nominees.

As for Stranger Things, Big Little Lies and The Handmaid's Tale, their absence is not the result of a snub: all three shows aired too late in 2019 to be eligible for the awards.

The 2019 Emmys will take place on 22 September.
