British stars won big at this year's Emmy Awards, with Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge scooping three gongs at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

Thirteen awards went to UK-based stars at the 71st edition of the show, while HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones was nominated a whopping 32 times.

But as ever with award shows, the focus wasn't always on the nominees, winners or awards themselves, with much of the online commentary focusing on brand new meme content.

And the 2019 ceremony did not disappoint, with the Twittersphere awash with another glorious round of hilarious memes for yet another year. Here are some of the best we came across.

Jason Bateman's reaction to his surprise win

The actor took home the prize for best directing for Ozark at the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

His facial reaction to hearing his name announced was quickly turned into a meme on Twitter as the star was left astonished at his first win as a director.

And even more Jason Bateman

Billy Porter's fashion sense

Porter made history on Sunday night after becoming the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy in the lead actor in a drama series category.

But as usual it wasn't just Porter's nomination that got people talking, as he stole the show with an inspired wardrobe choice once again - this time with a frankly huge cowboy hat.

Game of Thrones' Emmy win

It's fair to say, the last season of Game of Thrones received a mixed reaction all round, with criticism levelled at the plot and screen darkness, among others.

But despite the criticism, the series won the award for Outstanding Drama Series despite the mixed reviews - and Twitter of course had a similarly divided reaction .

Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer

Jodie Comer was another surprise win last night, bagging a gong for Best Actress - and her Killing Eve co-star Sandra Oh was all for her last night.

...but back to Game of Thrones

If you cast your mind back to the GoT finale, Bran was controversially crowned king at the season's end.

But when 10 GoT cast members got up on stage of present the award for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series, Bran was nowhere to be seen.

In fact Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran, was in the audience and not on the stage - a fact Twitter did not fail to point out.

THAT walk from Gwyneth Paltrow

Despite the many headline-grabbing moments of this year's Emmys, 2019 belonged to one woman - Gwyneth Paltrow, and her super-slow walk.

Here is is in all its glory:
