An empty Pets at Home store looks set to be taken over and given a new lease of life. Planning documents reveal the unit which has been vacant since December 12 could become a discount homeware and grocery megastore.

The Wey Retail Park in Byfleet is already home to PureGym, Halfords and a Home Bargains. Now Home Bargains bosses have submitted an application to take over the empty unit directly next door, turning the already large shop into a megastore.

Pets at Home left the site, in December, due to already having a two stores locally, in Walton-on-Thames and Woking. The lease for Pets at Home expires in February 2025, according to planning documents submitted to Woking Borough Council.

The empty unit features 779 square metres of shop floor at the ground level and 299 square metres on a mezzanine floor which was previously used as a dog groomers. The planning application, submitted by Home Bargains' parent company, TJ Morris, suggest amalgamating the two existing units and removing the existing mezzanine with an overall reduction in floor space by 281 square meters.

Car parking outside the front of the unit, should the application be approved, could be configured to cater to customers. The frontage could also be renewed.

It is anticipated that the upsizing of Home Bargains will serve the community well given it's close proximity to other shops, and connected to public transport. The shop is only 500 metres from the M25.

Furthermore, new jobs could be created as a result of the proposed expansion. The application has moved on to the consultation period.
