End of the F***ing World also filmed "different" end

Warning: this article contains spoilers from the season one finale of The End of the F***ing World.

The End of The F***ing World's season one cliffhanger ending actually wasn't the only one that they shot, it turns out.

The acclaimed series closes out as Alex Lawther's character James runs from police across the beach, the screen cutting to black as we hear a gunshot and his fate is left up-in-the-air.

Ambiguity aside, Lawther has now revealed that a much bleaker ending to the series, leaving thing much less open-ended.

"Originally, we shot a very different version to what was cut together for the series," he told NME.

"The other version left it more unlikely that James was alive. There was some ambiguity but in the version that was used it's very ambiguous. I really like that because it means we can do a second season."

Speaking of whether he thinks James dies, Lawther added: "What we are left with is very open-ended. It's just that gun shot and then fade to black. A part of me thinks it's almost too perfect, too Romeo and Juliet if he died.

"I don't think James and Allysa would stand for that. They'd think they were more complicated than that. They're not hopeless romantics and life isn't like that.

"Life is not a Shakespearean tragedy, there's more mundanity. Given the tone of the series, it might be interesting if they actually had to deal with the consequences of their actions."

Creator John Entwistle previously argued that whether James is alive or not is beside the point, so we'll just have to wait until season two to get some answers (that's if it ever actually happens).

The End of the F***ing World is streaming now on Netflix and All4.
