Endangered Platypus Spotted in Peel River Near Tamworth After Rains

A rare platypus was seen swimming in the Peel River near Tamworth, New South Wales, on July 28, after reports said a little over an inch of rain was recorded at the Tamworth Airport.

Platypus populations in the Peel River systems have faced local extinction during periods of intense drought in the region, the Northern Daily Leader reported.

Reports said the city of Tamworth has been on “level five” water restrictions for just under a year due to drought. However, a minor flood warning was issued for the Peel River in the Tamworth area on Tuesday after rains increased water levels, reports said. Credit: Bamma Ball via Storyful
