Engineers have been told to alter the timings of temporary traffic lights on one of the city's busiest roads after roadworks caused 'chaos'. Four-way lights are currently running on Meir's Sandon Road where they have left long queues in both directions.

As reported by StokeonTrentLive the works, by Cadent, are replacing old gas pipes with plastic ones. Residents have also been warned that at times gas supplies may have to be turned off.

Ward councillor Faisal Hussain has been contacted over the congestion in the neighbourhood - around Ryder Road - after works got underway on Thursday. The community leader said he had been made aware the temporary lights had been 'causing chaos'.

Cllr Hussain contacted the city council's highways teams over the works - which are running until October 16 - who have since confirmed changes to the way the temporary lights will function. The local authority's highways team says the lights will be under 'manual control' between 7am and 9.30am and from 3pm until 7pm.

While the lights are also on side streets, preference will be given for traffic on Sandon Road where it will remain on green for longer. In an email to the councillor, the council's highways team added: "They will monitor the traffic situation and if it is still an issue they are happy to put manual control on it between 7am and 7pm."
