Lancaster: England 'Gutted' By World Cup Loss

England rugby head coach Stuart Lancaster says he has replayed his team's defeat at the hands of Australia and says he stands by his players.

His side crashed out of the World Cup by losing 33-13 to Australia at Twickenham, making them the first World Cup hosts to fail to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

Lancaster told a news conference on Sunday his immediate focus was on the next game, against Uruguay next weekend.

"The accountability and responsibility lies with me. Family is a big thing, also what's right for England and what's right for the team.

"All that will come into the equation, but 12 hours after the final whistle, that's not for now," he told reporters.

"All things are being considered, but not for now for me.

"I sat in front of the management team at the hotel and said we've got a game to play on Saturday. I need to get the team ready to play Uruguay on Saturday and that's my priority."

He added: "I think there are a lot of good young players in the (England) team, I think the foundations are strong...but clearly we weren't ready to win and get out of this pool.

"We're not going to hide behind anything else. Credit to Australia and apologies to everyone else because we're absolutely gutted."

After losing last weekend to Wales, England needed to beat two-time champions Australia to maintain a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals from the difficult Pool A.

But flyhalf Bernard Foley orchestrated England's demise, scoring all but five of Australia's points.

After the match, former England hooker Brian Moore took to Twitter to say: "England RWC - no excuses from me. In the end, we simply were not good enough. Good Night, and Good Luck."
