England have emerged victorious from a long and often difficult tour of South Africa.

The tourists - who have been beset by illness and injury during the four-match series - won the fourth Test by 191 runs at the Wanderers on Monday to clinch a 3-1 series triumph.

It will go down as some comeback following a listless 107-run opening defeat in Centurion, with England subsequently rattling off wins in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg.

Standard Sport assesses the individual performances from Joe Root's men across the tour...

Rory Burns: 7

Seems a long time since his 84 gave England hope at Centurion. Will come straight back in when fit, but that will take a while.

Zak Crawley: 7

Only averaged 32.6 but showed promise, especially at the Wanderers. Has the game to succeed in Australia. Extra point for catching at Cape Town.

Dom Sibley: 8

Very consistent, and got that breakout hundred at Cape Town. Is a concern that he was caught on the legside three times, and that he got out five times when set.

But only once did he fail to reach 29.

Joe Denly: 5

Averaged exactly 30, which is also his career average. Tailed away after a promising start to leave his place under threat. Bogged down against spin, but deserves Sri Lanka.

Joe Root: 7

A good series as captain and, after two fifties in Johannesburg, a solid one with the bat too. Will do well to better his four-fer in Port Elizabeth.

Ben Stokes: 9

Just the sixth player to get 300 runs (he made 318), 10 wickets and 10 catches (he took 12) in one series (Sobers did it three times). Selfless to a fault, and achieved all this amid a backdrop of personal turmoil.

Ollie Pope: 9

A breakthrough series. The century in Port Elizabeth showed all his gears, but he changed the game in Cape Town and fizzed in Johannesburg. Can catch, too. Leave him at no6.

Jonny Bairstow: 3

Not seen since Centurion, where a surprise selection did not bring success. Will enter the frame for no3 berth in South Africa.

Jos Buttler: 4

A struggle, particularly with the bat but occasionally with the gloves. Buttler needs a rest, and it should come while England are in Sri Lanka. He is too important in other formats to be compromised.

Sam Curran: 6

Kept popping up. Critical with the ball at Centurion, then picked up handy wickets thereafter. Helpful runs in the last two Tests too, but needs to knuckle down.

Jofra Archer: 6

Took wickets at Centurion, but was not at his best. Sad not to see him for the rest of the series, but will be back.

Stuart Broad: 8

14 wickets at 19 is a superb return. Remains a menace with the new ball, and seems to enjoy being the elder statesman. Remarkably, made runs in Cape Town.

James Anderson: 8

Was so critical to the win in Cape Town, before heading home. Not done yet.

Dom Bess: 7

Very well bowled, youngster. Was solid in Cape Town, then took five wickets in Port Elizabeth. A much improved bowler, who confirmed that he has a Test future.

Mark Wood: 9

It was great to see him on the field once – let alone twice. Bowled very fast and took his wickets at 13.5, but provided surprising runs too.

Chris Woakes: 7

Often underestimated, he made a super return in Johannesburg, where he bowled much better than his figures of three for 85 suggest.
