England warmed up for Euro 2020 with a 1-0 victory over Romania in their final pre-tournament friendly.

Here’s how Gareth Southgate’s team rated at the Riverside...

Sam Johnstone 7

Brilliant save denied Ivan an equaliser when largely given little to do.

Ben Godfrey 6

Got up well in support Sancho on the right. At the back he didn’t always have Paun under control.

Ben White 6

Romania got behind him on a couple of occasions, but generally solid.

Tyrone Mings 6

Nervous start saw him give away a needless corner. Settled quickly after that and an important block on Cicaldau kept Romania at bay in the second half.

Luke Shaw 7

A couple of early runs towards the box put Romania under pressure. Didn’t get the ball in dangerous areas often enough.

Jack Grealish 7

Saw plenty of the ball in the first half. Playing in midfield, he supported Rashford well, but the pair were not always on the same wavelength.

Interesting to see if Southgate keeps him in a deeper role. Won the penalty when moved wide left.

Kalvin Phillips 6

Neat and tidy, kept the ball moving with the odd ambitious pass to open up the Romania defence.

James Ward-Prowse 6

The quality of his dead ball delivery is as good as anyone’s in Southgate’s squad. Both Calvert-Lewin and Godfrey could have scored from his free kicks. Must be in Southgate’s mind to replace Alexander-Arnold.

Marcus Rashford 7

Handed the armband, but will he start against Croatia? Tried to run at Romania and got himself into the box on a number of occasions. But the final ball just wasn’t there.

Cool from the spot to give England the lead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6

Hit the bar with a wonderful header. Didn’t get enough service, but still won a second penalty for England.

Jadon Sancho 7

Wonderful curling effort hit the bar. Delivery wasn’t always the best and less of an influence in the second half.

Substitutes

Jordan Henderson (Phillips, 46’) 5

Good to get minutes into his legs. Demanded penalty-taking duties and failed to score from the spot.

Declan Rice (Ward-Prowse, 65’) 5

Enabled Henderson to drive further forward with insurance behind him.

Jude Bellingham (Sancho, 65’) 6

Very bright when coming on. Showed some lovely touches and nearly got on the score sheet.

Jesse Lingard (Rashford, 75) 5

Injected some speed into England’s passing.

Kieran Trippier (Shaw, 75’) 4

Didn’t get much of a chance to go forward.

Ollie Watkins (Calvert-Lewin, 82’) 4

Euros came too soon for him, but he’s got an England future. Bright in the short time he was on.

Unused: Pickford, Ramsdale, D. Henderson, Coady, Kane
