England national selector Ed Smith is to meet Adil Rashid to discuss his decision to quit red-ball cricket — despite the Yorkshire spinner saying he is unwilling to change his mind.

Rashid’s delicious delivery to dismiss Virat Kohli at Headingley on Tuesday ended a brilliant white-ball international summer for the leg-spinner and got tongues wagging once more about whether he could make a Test return.

So far, though, Rashid is unwilling to go back on the decision he made earlier this year. He is not available for Sunday’s Roses match and Yorkshire have even had to go to the lengths of bringing in Josh Poysden, another leg-spinner, from Warwickshire.

Rashid insists his red-ball retirement is only temporary, but he is not about to change his plans immediately.

Somerset’s Jack Leach and Dom Bess, England’s two most recent spinners, were presented with an opportunity to bowl India A out on the final day of their tour match against the Lions at Worcester today and impress Smith ahead of next Thursday’s squad announcement for the First Test.

Meanwhile, one option for the playing regulations for the Hundred — the ECB’s new format and competition which starts in 2020 — will be to have five-ball overs, with changes of end after each two. Trials will take place in September, but a decision on the playing regulations has not yet been met.

Another option to speed the game up could be a single change of ends halfway through an innings.

A steering group discussing regulations will meet again to iron out details for the events, but no final decisions on the competition’s format have yet been made.
