Follow live reaction from England vs Sri Lanka at the T20 World Cup.

England maintained their 100 per cent record in the tournament, having seen off the West Indies, Bangladesh and Australia in a dominant start, with a superb 26-run win in Sharjah.

Opener Jos Buttler was the star of the show last time out against Australia and went one better this time around with an unbeaten 101, a first international T20 century.

Assisted by 40 from skipper Eoin Morgan, England posted 163 from their 20 before two wickets from Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Chris Jordan eventually saw Sri Lanka fall 26 runs short despite a dogged chase.

The win leaves England all but into the semi-finals ahead of their final Super 12 match, against South Africa on Saturday.

England beat Sri Lanka to maintain 100% record

Monday 1 November 2021 18:10 , Ben Burrows

Jos Buttler led England out of their first mini-crisis of the T20 World Cup and to the brink of the semi-finals as his maiden international century in the format underpinned a 26-run victory over Sri Lanka.

England were asked to defend a total for the first time in the tournament following three commanding wins chasing and they were initially suffocated by Sri Lanka’s bowlers after lurching to 47 for three from 10 overs in Sharjah.

Buttler, fresh from match-winning heroics against Australia, reined in his aggressive instincts to begin with, taking 45 balls to reach fifty, before exploding in thrilling style to finish unbeaten on 101 from 67 deliveries.

He clattered the final ball of the innings for six to reach his ton and steer England to 163 for four, the bulk of which was made up of a 112-run stand between Buttler and Eoin Morgan, before Sri Lanka responded with 137 all out.

Sri Lanka 137 all out: England win by 26 runs

Monday 1 November 2021 18:08 , Ben Burrows

The only downside for England tonight was an injury to paceman Tymal Mills.

The left-arm seamer pulled up midway through his second over and England will now be sweating on his fitness for the next match and beyond.

Mark Wood and David Willey, who are both yet to feature at the tournament, are next men up if England are forced into a change.

Sri Lanka 137 all out: England win by 26 runs

Monday 1 November 2021 17:48 , Ben Burrows

Much was made of England not being forced to chase at any point thus far but that doubt, along with all the others, can be put to bed too after an excellent all-round display in Sharjah.

Jos Buttler was irrepressible with the bat despite a slow start eventually bludgeoning a first T20I hundred, sealed with a six off the last ball of the 20th over.

England then turned the screw out the gate with the ball before being put under pressure by excellent counter attacking batting from Bhanuka Rajapakse and Wanindu Hasaranga.

But crucial wickets late saw their challenge falter leaving England to win by 26 runs.

Next up is South Africa on Saturday.

Sri Lanka 137 all out: England win by 26 runs

Monday 1 November 2021 17:45 , Ben Burrows

That is four from four for England and the hardest of all them so far.

Sri Lanka made them work for that but England’s class - particularly in the field at the death - was the difference.

They aren’t guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals but that win all but guarantees it.

They top Group 1 and it will take some mathematic gymnastics to dislodge them.

Sri Lanka 137 all out: England win by 26 runs

Monday 1 November 2021 17:43 , Ben Burrows

Lahiru Kumara is the last man in for Sri Lanka and these have basically got to all go for them now.

Moeen is a seasoned veteran at this though and gives him nothing to go at from the remainder of the 19th.

Three runs and then Maheesh Theekshana goes big... only for Chris Jordan to snaffle it inside the rope.

That is that. Sri Lanka are 137 all out. England win by 26 runs.

Sri Lanka 134-9: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:39 , Ben Burrows

Moeen will bowl the 19th over. This is the one that needs to go if Sri Lanka are to have any chance.

Chamika Karunaratne knows it as well and opts to keep the strike after failing to find the boundary off the first delivery.

He gets into the second one though... but it’s not enough as that man Roy waits in the deep to take a much simpler catch this time.

England need one wicket.

Sri Lanka 134-8: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:36 , Ben Burrows

Chris Jordan will bowl the 18th for England as Eoin Morgan shuffles his pack of options again.

That one is all about Jos Buttler though. Not content with a ton in the England’s innings, he’s run out Shanaka for 26.

The ball is full and straight from Jordan and beats Shanaka. The skipper thinks there might be one but Buttler has other ideas, taking his wicketkeeper’s glove off and throwing the stumps down from second slip. Brilliant.

Two wickets in four balls for England and both set batters are gone. Superb work in the field.

There’s nothing they can do about that though as a wild flash from Dushmantha Chameera speeds through the slip region off the edge goes to the boundary. Sorely needed for Sri Lanka.

Chameera tries to go again but Dawid Malan is waiting on the rope at square leg and that’s another for England.

That’s Jordan done for the day. 2 for 24 from him. Excellent.

Sri Lanka eight down and need 30 off 12.

Sri Lanka 130-6: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:26 , Ben Burrows

Livingstone on for the fourth of his over as England look to take pace off again.

Again it’s about limiting that boundary for England. For Sri Lanka it’s about taking one of these overs for 15-20.

This is tidy again from Livingstone as he looks to restrict these batters with no width whatsoever.

Hasaranga again counter punches though as a streaky slice over point goes all the way for four.

Livingstone responds though as Hasaranga looks to go all the way but Jason Roy is waiting in the deep as he pockets it next to the rope before tossing it to substitute Sam Billings as he slides out of bounds.

Quite brilliant from Roy. Saves six and gets a wicket in one. Hasaranga’s brilliant innings is over. He goes for 34 off just 20.

Sri Lanka 123-5: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:20 , Ben Burrows

This one looks like it will go down to the wire here.

England probably slightly ahead still with runs on the board but it will only take one good over from Sri Lanka to swing the momentum their way.

Jordan is on to bowl the 16th looking to break this partnership which is now ticking along nicely.

It’s all about limiting the boundaries for England now. Singles they can deal with.

Hasaranga knows it too and an excellent drive over the top of cover brings four. Another good over for Sri Lanka as another 10 comes off the chase.

Sri Lanka 113-5: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:13 , Ben Burrows

Livingstone back for his third over.

England are going to have to find an extra over from one of their bowlers now that Woakes has bowled those extra three balls in relief of Mills.

Sri Lanka surely target one of these next couple for a big one? They can’t die wondering.

It won’t be this one though as Livingstone tucks Hasaranga and Shanaka up and restricts them to singles.

That’s what they were after though, a big six over cow corner from one that just sat up a touch from Shanaka.

15 gone. 10 from that last one. 51 required.

Sri Lanka 103-5: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:09 , Ben Burrows

Wanindu Hasaranga knows Sri Lanka need to get a move on here and he sees Mills coming before slapping him back over his head for half a dozen to open the 14th.

That was a 91 metre hit - the longest we’ve seen today from either side.

Four more off Shanaka’s glove as Buttler dives despairingly and Sri Lanka are into three figures.

Mills has a problem here and it looks like injury is going to force him from the field.

Chris Woakes is on to bowl the remaining three balls of the over that Sri Lanka take a further two from.

One of these overs has to go for 20-25 plus if they are to have a chance but this one - surely Mills’ last - was expensive nonetheless.

Sri Lanka 89-5: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 17:00 , Ben Burrows

Livingstone returns for his second over to bowl the 13th.

Wanindu Hasaranga is flying high after a good afternoon with the ball and he starts well with the bat too carving a wide one through point for four.

After the boundary off the first ball it’s a good response from the England allrounder as a couple of singles mean he gets out conceding just seven.

Sri Lanka need 75 from seven overs. Where’s your money?

Sri Lanka 82-5: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:55 , Ben Burrows

Adil Rashid back on to finish off his four.

As so often for England he has been excellent, not only taking wickets but doing so without conceding hardly any runs.

It’s more tidy stuff from the Yorkshireman with Sri Lanka taking just five off him.

He ends with 2-19. Phenomenal.

Sri Lanka 77-5: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:53 , Ben Burrows

Chris Woakes back for into the attack for a second over after a somewhat expensive first.

Rajapakse loves it there and a back of a length ball is hammered into the square leg stand for a maximum.

And that’s four more as Woakes errs fuller and is punished through the covers.

Pressure on the England bowler... but he gets the last laugh as Rajapakse goes boundary hunting again only to hole out in the deep to a diving Jason Roy.

Good grab that diving forwards and the dangerous Rajapakse is gone for 26. Sri Lanka five down.

Sri Lanka 66-4: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:43 , Ben Burrows

Skipper Dasun Shanaka is at the crease now for Sri Lanka and they’re in desperate need of some kind of partnership with still north of 100 to get.

Tymal Mills is on as England look to up the pace of matters in these middle overs.

Mills is a genuine wicket-taker in this phase of the game with his slower and change of pace deliveries likely to be effective on this Sharjah surface.

He fires one into Rajapakse’s pads but nothing doing as it’s far too leg side.

That one isn’t great though as a wider ball is steered past backward point for four by Shanaka.

End of 10 and at halfway Sri Lanka are 66-4 chasing 164.

Sri Lanka 58-4: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:37 , Ben Burrows

Jordan continues from the other end after going for just the six off his first over.

Some brilliant Jonny Bairstow saves a certain four in the deep and the very next ball Fernando is trapped in front.

Full and straight, that one is about as plumb as you’re ever going to see. Knocking all three out. He goes for 13.

A fourth wicket to fall and this Sri Lankan chase is beginning to stall under the weight of that 163 total from England.

Sri Lanka 54-3: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:31 , Ben Burrows

The super economical Rashid back for his third over as England look to strangle this chase before it gets off the ground.

In these conditions he shows so much control and rarely gives you anything as a batter.

Rajapakse sends one high in the air with Chris Woakes underneath it... but he shells it. Poor from the England allrounder in the deep.

Stick that one in a museum - Woakes letting England down. The ultimate rarity.

Eight gone now. Sri Lanka 54-3 and need another 110 to win.

Sri Lanka 50-3: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:27 , Ben Burrows

Liam Livingstone on now as England use a third spinner of the innings so far.

One of the most dominant batters in world cricket, he’s also a sneaky effective bowler in this format and took wickets against Australia with a combination of off and leg-spin.

Rajapakse doesn’t mind which way that one is turning though as he steps into a full-ish delivery and slaps it down the ground over Livingstone’s head for a big six.

Sri Lanka 40-3: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:21 , Ben Burrows

Adil Rashid continues and - you know what I’m about t say - it’s another wicket and another with a googly.

Kusal Perera gets it all wrong and sends a miscue skyward with a grateful Eoin Morgan waiting underneath it to take it.

A third wicket in the powerplay for England and the second to go to Rashid.

Bhanuka Rajapakse is the next man in for Sri Lanka and he grabs his first boundary of just his second ball with a slightly streaky but well hit strike over mid-off. Four runs.

Sri Lanka 34-2: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:17 , Ben Burrows

Chris Jordan into the attack now as Eoin Morgan switches back to pace.

New batsman Avishka Fernando needs a score in this tournament and that’s a good start as he climbs into one and drives a slightly wide delivery through the covers for four to open his account for the evening.

A couple of singles to round off the over and Sri Lanka are 34-2 after five.

Sri Lanka 28-2: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:11 , Ben Burrows

Right then, Morgan answers that strong over with his trump card. Adil Rashid is on for his first twirl of the innings.

Expect plenty of googlies here with Rashid looking to beat both edges of the bat.

And right on cue. One that goes the other way off the pitch does for Asalanka as he skies one for Moeen to pouch in the infield.

As he so often does for this England side, Rashid gets the breakthrough. Asalanka goes for a brisk 21. Sri Lanka two down.

Sri Lanka 24-1: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:06 , Ben Burrows

Moeen now back on to try and keep the chase in hand from England’s point of view.

Asalanka has the gas pedal pressed though and middles a gorgeous sweep to the boundary for four.

And then another. It’s fractionally off line from Moeen but that is an excellent shot again giving Morgan no chance at square leg.

Just the start they wanted here.

England vs Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 16:02 , Ben Burrows

It’s Chris Woakes - hero against Australia - who will start from the other end.

Sri Lanka need to get into this chase and Charith Asalanka knows it. He smokes one over long on for the first six of this reply.

The next one goes to the fence too as an ugly inside edge flies for four past square leg.

They all count though of course. 14/1 after two.

England vs Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka chasing 164 to win

Monday 1 November 2021 15:58 , Ben Burrows

Right then, the Sri Lankan riposte.

Moeen is first up for England with the new ball as Eoin Morgan looks to emulate what he’s already seen have success on this pitch and take pace off.

That’s not what Sri Lanka wanted though.

Morgan fires a throw in and Pathum Nissanka is gone run out at the batter’s end.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 163/4

Monday 1 November 2021 15:54 , Ben Burrows

Here’s Buttler’s wagon wheel.

Runs everywhere, basically.

His six sixes is the equal most by an England player at a T20 World Cup.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 163/4

Monday 1 November 2021 15:52 , Ben Burrows

An amazing acceleration from Buttler and England there after struggling to get going early on.

He took just 24 runs off his first 30 balls only to then smash 77 off the last 37.

At his best there are fewer better and he has - again - put England in a strong position ahead of the Sri Lankan reply.

England vs Sri Lanka: England finish batting 163/4 with Buttler century

Monday 1 November 2021 15:45 , Sarah Rendell

Chameera came in for the last over and Buttler immediately hit a four to try and give England their best shot in this one.

A two, two and a six gives Buttler his first international T20 hundred! Wow, what a player!

The first ten overs were underwhelming from England but they have come back well in the second ten to attempt to continue their unbeaten run.

It’s all down to Sri Lanka now to beat England’s tally.

England vs Sri Lanka: 149/4 Morgan out

Monday 1 November 2021 15:37 , Sarah Rendell

Hasaranga was drafted back in but even the star bowler couldn’t stop England’s charge as Morgan hit another six.

But Hasaranga got his revenge as Morgan goes 40 from 36.

The rest of the 19th over was played between Buttler and Moeen Ali.

Despite losing their captain, England have got right back in this match with one over left.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 141/3 after 18 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:34 , Sarah Rendell

Shanaka struggled against Buttler in the 18th over.

Buttler continued his fabulous form as he hit another two sixes he continued to add to his tally.

He had a four, single and another single with the last three balls of the over. Sensational from him.

Morgan 34 from34 and Buttler 86 from 59.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 122/3 after 17 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:29 , Sarah Rendell

Chameera came back in for the 17th and Morgan hits a huge six. What a hit! 90m into the stands and England are firing now.

A single handed the batting back to Buttler and he forced Chameera into a no ball. Fernando did extremely well to stop the ball hitting the boundary.

Another impressive over from England who are finishing their innings strongly.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 110/3 after 16 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:23 , Sarah Rendell

Sri Lanka brought Shanaka in to try and stop England’s charge in the last five overs.

He started well with Morgan having a dot in the first ball. A single, two, single and single came next.

England slowed in the 16th over with Shanaka more unpredictable than his team-mates. But momentum feels like it’s in their pocket still.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 105/3 after 15 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:18 , Sarah Rendell

Kumara stepped up for the 15th over and Morgan read the bowler incredibly well with a superb six.

Buttler then collected two sixes as his partnership with Morgan started to piece together.

Both added a few singles to send England into 100 runs in the 15th.

After an underwhelming opening 10 overs, England are stating to come alive and are right back in this.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 83/3 after 14 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:12 , Sarah Rendell

Just as England were getting back on track Hasaranga came up to bowl - Sri Lanka’s most impressive bowler with two wickets in the match so far.

Buttler played the first ball safely, collecting a single. Captain Morgan picked up a single too.

The talisman gets another single and then a poor delivery from Hasaranga sees the Englishman take four. Morgan picked up another single.

Buttler has now got over 50 runs in a decent innings so far.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 75/3 after 13 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:08 , Sarah Rendell

Karunaratne was outplayed by Buttler who hit a single, four and then a six.

The star got into his stride just when England needed him to and he didn’t stop there.

A two and a single saw England’s best over in the match so far.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 61/3 after 12 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 15:03 , Sarah Rendell

Theekshana came back in for the 12th and he read Buttler well to dot from the first and second balls.

The England talisman then hit a single and hearts were in mouths as Morgan almost fell.

Theekshana has grown into this match with just two singles coming from the 12th over.

England vs Sri Lanka: 59/3 after 11 overs

Monday 1 November 2021 14:59 , Sarah Rendell

Buttler got England’s fortunes back on track as he recorded four, two, two, single and a single with Morgan adding a single from Kumara’s six balls.

Buttler did extremely well to get back as Sri Lanka looked to get him out.

He hasn’t been as impressive as he was against Australia but he is still the standout for England so far.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 47/3 after tenth over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:53 , Sarah Rendell

Here’s a look at Hasaranga’s wicket of Roy

England vs Sri Lanka: England 47/3 after tenth over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:51 , Sarah Rendell

Are the conditions the difference here? Sri Lanka have played two matches at the ground with England not playing yet.

Theekshana continued his side’s good form in then tenth with Morgan hitting two singles and Buttler having just a single.

They are halfway through their overs and they need to ramp up some scores to make their bowling easier!

England vs Sri Lanka: England 44/3 after ninth over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:47 , Sarah Rendell

Karunaratne came in for his first bowling duty of the match in the ninth over.

He picked up where his team-mates left off with a dot from the first ball. A single was all Buttler could get from the second and Morgan had the same with the third.

Sri Lanka were convinced Buttler was gone for LBW and they called a review. Buttler remained in as it came down to umpire’s call.

Another single sees out the ninth and underwhelming over for England.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 41/3 after eighth over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:41 , Sarah Rendell

Theekshana thought he had Morgan out twice in the eighth over but the captain survived.

While that was a positive for England, Buttler and Morgan were only able to add four singles.

England are yet to impose themselves with the first over the only that has impressed so far.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 37/3 after seventh over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:37 , Sarah Rendell

Kumara had a stunning over in the seventh as England were unable to add anything to their tally until the fifth ball with Morgan adding a single.

This is incredible from Sri Lanka so far, they have England rattled and they will need to continue this with the match a must win for them.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 36/3 after sixth over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:33 , Sarah Rendell

Captain Morgan was tapped in for Bairstow midway through the sixth over.

Hasaranga continued his great bowling with England just collecting two singles.

England are under pressure for the first time in the T20 World Cup so it will be interesting to see how they handle this now.

England vs Sri Lanka: Bairstow out

Monday 1 November 2021 14:31 , Sarah Rendell

Bairstow is now in with Buttler for the sixth over and Hasaranga comes back to bowl.

He has been their stand out bowler so far and he started well with England just getting a single. The officials reviewed LBW for Bairstow which resulted in a few nervous minutes for England.

And it was the worst decision for England as Bairstow is out with no runs! Hasaranga is having a fabulous match, his second wicket so far.

England vs Sri Lanka: 34/2 after fifth over as Malan falls

Monday 1 November 2021 14:27 , Sarah Rendell

Chameera is back for the fifth over and will be hoping he does better from the first.

Buttler handles the first two balls well with two scoops. But Sri Lanka read the play on the second ball to stop England at just a single. Malan got his fifth delivery of the match and it was a great strike, a clean and powerful hit from the stumps gifts him four.

Malan couldn’t replicate the score with another ball aimed his way with a dot. Chameera looked convinced he had Malan out but the catch didn’t come off but then the bowler has reason to celebrate as he claimed a wicket.

Malan out for 6 from 9 balls, Sri Lanka now have two wickets after the fifth over!

England vs Sri Lanka: England 29/1 after the fourth over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:21 , Sarah Rendell

Spin bowler Theekshana in charge of the fourth over and he starts it well with Buttler just getting a single from the first ball.

He continued well with England getting nothing from the second or third. Sri Lanka kept their dominance in the over with the final three balls only getting England three singles.

A few wides from Theekshana the only blunders from the bowler.

This over has taken Buttler to 2,000 T20 runs.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 25/1 after third over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:16 , Sarah Rendell

Buttler has a great shot with the ball smacking the boundary for four.

Kumara yet to undo Buttler as he hits another four. Sri Lanka will want to get rid of Buttler as soon as they can after that spectacular performance against Australia.

But Buttler gifts England another two runs with Sri Lanka’s fielding failing with an easy shot not collected.

While Buttler didn’t win any runs from three of the balls in the third over he is definitely the talisman here,

England vs Sri Lanka: England 15/1 after the second over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:12 , Sarah Rendell

Malan is now in after Roy was hit out, a spectacular play from Hasaranga.

Malan’s first hit wins a run and Buttler can’t add any more with the fifth ball of the second over.

A single follows and Hasaranga is in his element here. This match is a must win for his team and they needed a lift after that first over from England.

Game on!

England vs Sri Lanka: Roy out

Monday 1 November 2021 14:09 , Sarah Rendell

12/0 from the first over and Buttler is first to bat in the second but can only eek out one run from a slick hit.

Second ball and Roy is out. What a bowl from Hasaranga as he hits through the line. Roy tries to rescue the hit but the ball smacks the wickets.

A brilliant wicket for Sri Lanka.

England vs Sri Lanka: England 12-0 from the first over

Monday 1 November 2021 14:06 , Sarah Rendell

Here we go, the match is underway!

Chameera is bowling first with Jason Roy batting for two runs with the first ball.

The second ball gifts England no runs with a toe-end hit from the star but he improves with the third ball with a four-run hit.

A single run is all he could achieve from the fourth ball. Buttler hit the fifth ball for three runs with Roy clocking up another two with the last ball over the first over.

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of England vs Sri Lanka from the T20 World Cup.

England will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent record in the tournament this afternoon, having seen off the West Indies, Bangladesh and Australia in a dominant start.

Opener Jos Buttler was the star of the show last time out against the old enemy hitting a dizzying 71 not out from 32 balls as England's made light of a target of 126 to claim a third commanding win in the Super 12s that has put them on the brink of reaching the semi-finals.

Buttler's innings emphasised his reputation as one of the best white-ball performers in the world and England captain Eoin Morgan insisted his deputy is "changing the game" with his approach to batting in the short formats.

The wicketkeeper-batsman will again surely be key against a Sri Lankan bowling attack that has looked dangerous so far.
