England vs Tunisia, World Cup 2018 team news and starting line-ups for Group G game

Gareth Southgate has named his first World Cup starting XI, with Harry Kane leading out an England XI many expected to see against Tunisia.

The Three Lions face the Africans in their Group G opener in Volgograd, with Ashley Young, Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire preferred to Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Gary Cahill, respectively.

Rose’s fitness battle and lack of game time at Tottenham means Manchester United’s Young gets the nod from Southgate, though Rose did impress in the warm-up outings.

Henderson, who was a close contender with Kane for the captain’s armband, did enough in the win over Costa Rica at Elland Road to remain above Dier in the pecking order, with the Spurs midfielder having looked a little vulnerable against Nigeria.

Cahill, meanwhile, scored and picked up a man of the match award in that warm-up win over the Super Eagles at Wembley, but loses out to Maguire, preferred for his ability on the ball.

England XI: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Henderson, Lingard, Alli, Young; Sterling, Kane

Subs: Rose, Dier, Vardy, Butland, Welbeck, Cahill, Jones, Delph, Rashford, Lofuts-Cheek, Alexander-Arnold, Pope.
