Harry Winks says Harry Kane will step aside and give Wayne Rooney the chance to score from the spot should England win a penalty on Thursday night.

Rooney has been recalled to the squad for England's friendly against the USA so that the nation's all-time leading scorer can get an emotional send-off from the fans.

The 33-year-old, who won the last of his 119 caps two years ago, is going to come on as a substitute in the second half.

Kane is England's first choice penalty taker in the England ranks, but Winks believes his Spurs team-mate will hand the ball to Rooney if they are awarded one so his international career can end on a high.

Winks told Standard Sport: "If there is a possibility for Wayne to score in his last game for England, Harry will definitely offer it to him in that situation.

"Will he take some convincing? No. I think Harry will offer the spot kick to Wayne to take. Harry puts the team first."

Rooney is England's all-time leading scorer with an impressive 53 goals from his 119 games.

Kane has already found the net a remarkable 19 times in just 34 matches though and Winks feels the Spurs striker has what it takes to overtake Rooney's landmark.

Winks added: "It is an amazing record to have and Wayne could even add to it tomorrow night.

"What he's done in his England career is fantastic. But the way Harry is going, he's only 25, so he has many years in him to break the record. Everyone, including Wayne, thinks he has a very good chance of doing it.

"Harry wants to keep on going. His mind-set is to go out and score in every game. He is ruthless in his way of thinking and always wants to get as many goals as possible when he's on the pitch. That mentality has served Wayne really well over the years and Harry has it too.

"There are plenty of matches for him to do it. Harry is also not the kind of player to just get one goal every time, he is someone that can get them in twos and hat-tricks. He can score in any situation in any game at any moment. He has the opportunity to do it, the credentials to do it.

"With his mind-set, someone who thinks of the team first and goals second, he can be phenomenal for the country for many years to come."
