All good things must come to an end, and England fans will have the chance to say a final farewell to Wayne Rooney at Wembley.

Technically, Rooney officially retired from international football in August 2017, but the country's most capped (119) and highest-scoring (53) male player of all time is back for tonight's match against the USA in what the FA has called 'The Wayne Rooney Foundation International' - a friendly in support of the forward's charitable interests.

The match will give Three Lions fans the opportunity to bid farewell to the country's most capped (119) and highest-scoring (53) male player, while also offering Gareth Southgate a chance to look forward with some exciting players coming through the ranks.

Southgate defends Rooney decision

"Those discussions started over 12 months ago; I was quite happy for the tribute to be before the World Cup but Wayne didn't want to detract from the team at that time, which everyone respected. That's why it was put back.

"Now we have the opportunity at Wembley to pay that tribute. I'm still able to look to the future with the squad we've picked, but also I've spoken a lot to the players about the shirt, the history of the short, honouring former players.

"The players would respect Wayne's contribution deserves the best possible send-off. I understand that's caused a lot of debate but it's a small way of appreciating what he's given to his country.

"We're a strange country in that we bemoan the fact that we haven't achieved as much as we'd like, and then we have a player who should be held in the highest regard and we're spending a lot of time justifying giving him that tribute."

Rooney on Wembley return: "It will be strange but something I am looking forward to. I had my first training session yesterday and it was strange getting in amongst the players at training.

"To run out at Wembley again will be something I will be proud of and it will be a special moment."

Rooney on cap controversy: "I think everyone is entitled to their opinions.

"I think the most important thing, speaking with the FA we both felt it was right, and speaking with the players they agree that it's right."

Rooney added: "I think as a country we haven't done anything like this before and this is the first time and I hope that in 10 or 15 years' time we're sat here for someone, say Harry Kane, who could possibly go on and get the goal-scoring record. Of course it's something different and I'm not asking people to agree with it.

"I think what is important as well is that the game is going to go ahead, and that I'm going to take part, there would be money raised for the children through the Wayne Rooney foundation, which is important to me.
