Wayne Rooney Foundation International
Date: Thursday, 15 November, 2018
Kick-off time: 8pm GMT

Wayne Rooney will pull on an England shirt for the final time at Wembley on tonight as the Three Lions host the USA in an international friendly.

Rooney officially retired from international football in August 2017 and is currently playing in the MLS for DC United, but is back for one last Wembley appearance in what the FA has called 'The Wayne Rooney Foundation International' - a friendly in support of the forward's charitable interests.

The match will give Three Lions fans the opportunity to bid farewell to the country's most capped (119) and highest-scoring (53) male player, while also offering Gareth Southgate a chance to look forward with some exciting players coming through the ranks.

Team news

England starting XI: Pickford, Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Delph, Keane, Dunk, Sancho, Winks, Wilson, Alli, Lingard

Wayne Rooney took his place on the England bench for the friendly clash with the United States as expected - with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate handing debuts to Lewis Dunk and Callum Wilson.

England's all-time leading goalscorer Rooney will make a substitute appearance at Wembley as the Football Association honour his international career.

The Wayne Rooney Foundation International against the United States, where Rooney now plies his trade with Major League Soccer side DC United, saw the next generation given a chance to impress.

While Rooney, confirmed as his usual number 10 on the teamsheet, was made to wait for his swansong Bournemouth striker Wilson and Dunk of Brighton were handed their first England caps in a much-changed line-up.

Southgate defends Rooney decision

"Those discussions started over 12 months ago; I was quite happy for the tribute to be before the World Cup but Wayne didn't want to detract from the team at that time, which everyone respected. That's why it was put back.

"Now we have the opportunity at Wembley to pay that tribute. I'm still able to look to the future with the squad we've picked, but also I've spoken a lot to the players about the shirt, the history of the short, honouring former players.

"The players would respect Wayne's contribution deserves the best possible send-off. I understand that's caused a lot of debate but it's a small way of appreciating what he's given to his country.

"We're a strange country in that we bemoan the fact that we haven't achieved as much as we'd like, and then we have a player who should be held in the highest regard and we're spending a lot of time justifying giving him that tribute."

Rooney on Wembley return: "It will be strange but something I am looking forward to. I had my first training session yesterday and it was strange getting in amongst the players at training.

"To run out at Wembley again will be something I will be proud of and it will be a special moment."

Rooney on cap controversy: "I think everyone is entitled to their opinions.

"I think the most important thing, speaking with the FA we both felt it was right, and speaking with the players they agree that it's right."

Rooney added: "I think as a country we haven't done anything like this before and this is the first time and I hope that in 10 or 15 years' time we're sat here for someone, say Harry Kane, who could possibly go on and get the goal-scoring record. Of course it's something different and I'm not asking people to agree with it.

"I think what is important as well is that the game is going to go ahead, and that I'm going to take part, there would be money raised for the children through the Wayne Rooney foundation, which is important to me.
