‘Enjoy him while you can,’ Everton star man targeted by Arsenal, Chelsea tipped to leave by pundit
Journalist for the Athletic Greg O’Keeffe has urged Everton supporters to enjoy Amadou Onana while they can before he inevitably leaves the club.
The 20-year-old has been one of the few positives for the Toffees this season, putting in consistently top-level performances in a side struggling for form.
However, with January interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, it seems like it will be a matter of time before he leaves Goodison Park for greener pastures.
Following Onana’s summer arrival for a fee of £33m from Lille, the Belgian has become very popular among the fan base, playing all but one league game under the recently sacked Frank Lampard.
The Belgium international also put in a Player of the Match performance on Saturday, as Everton picked up a monumentally important three points against Arsenal in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge.
Overall, in 19 appearances for the Blues this season, Onana has scored one goal and made one assist so far.
He is also versatile, with the ability to play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder, or even as a centre-back on occasion, which is largely down to the fact that he is a giant, standing at 6ft 4.
His best attributes are in terms of breaking up opposition attacks, as he loves a good slide tackle. This season, he has averaged 2.6 successful tackles and 1 interception per match for Everton.
Onana is also strong, quick and very skilful for a big lad. For instance, he humiliated Thomas Partey at the weekend with a cheeky turn at the weekend, while also outpacing the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White fairly easily.
However, according to O’Keefe, there’s a very good chance that Onana could break Evertonian hearts next summer.
Speaking on the All Together Now Podcast, he said: “We have got players like Onana who is going to be a world beater, we’ve said so many times.
“He’s got everything, hasn’t he? If he starts contributing goals as well, I just think we’ll have to enjoy him while we’ve got him.”
As mentioned, Arsenal reportedly strongly considered making a bid for Onana in January, as an alternative to Brighton’s Moises Caicedo. The midfielder is also on Chelsea’s radar, who registered an interest in the Belgian last month.
However, Onana has been very vocal about his willingness to stay and fight for the Toffees, at least, for now. Following his excellent performance against Arsenal, cameras caught him saying “I’m not f*cking leaving, I’m f*cking here” and kissing the Everton badge.
But, Toffees fans have seen it all before. Just think of Wayne Rooney, Ross Barkley and most recently Anthony Gordon, who all ultimately left for big-money moves elsewhere.
Additionally, if the unthinkable were to happen and Everton are relegated to the Championship, there is no way that they would be able to keep hold of Onana, especially given their ongoing financial issues.
For now, Onana is set to stay and fight for the Toffees at least until the end of the season and he may just have the quality to help his team avoid the drop.
