Epsom Derby 2024 road closures, Southern Rail timetable changes and where drivers can't stop

Thousands are set to descend on Epsom this weekend for the famous Epsom Derby races. The Betfred Derby Festival 2024 at Epsom Downs Racecourse will take place on Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June.

The event is a world-renowned horse racing, therefore it can be anticipated that heavy traffic and congestion will impact surrounding areas. There are also changes to the Southern Rail timetable - with some trains not running.

To mitigate travel delays, road closures, rule changes and relaxations will be enforced from Friday, May 31 and Sunday, June 2. Some routes will be shut altogether, like Walton Road south of the racecourse, and Ashley Road between Langley Vale Road and Downs Road.

Certain routes will be shut except for only emergency service vehicles, like Grandstand Road and Old London Road. Other routes will be turned into one-way streets only, so shuttle buses can get transport visitors to and from the racetrack.

A public footpath on Ashley Road that crosses to the southern side of the racecourse will not be in use during the event. Once the event is over, the path can be used by pedestrians again.

There is also an extensive list of streets where vehicles cannot stop to wait. Traffic wardens and police will be on patrol, on roads including Ashley Road, Chalk Lane and Strand Close.
