Erdogan and Pence Meet at Presidential Complex in Ankara

US Vice President Mike Pence met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Thursday, October 17, amid an ongoing Turkish invasion of Kurdish-held areas in northern Syria that Pence said he would call on Turkey to end.

Pence on Wednesday said he would lead a delegation with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, and James Jeffrey, the US Special Representative for Syria Engagement and the Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIL.

Pence said he would urge Erdogan “to stop the invasion, enact an immediate ceasefire, and begin negotiations to restore peace and stability to the region.”

According to reports, the meeting between Pence and Erdogan was closed to media, a decision made in spite of requests from Pence’s team. Credit: Turkish Presidency via Storyful
