Call the Midwife's Erin Doherty will play Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, for season three of The Crown.

She'll be joined by a host of new stars as the Netflix royal drama undergoes recasting to illustrate a progression in time.

Olivia Coleman will take over from Claire Foy in the role of Queen Elizabeth II, but the actress has said that she can't reveal anything about the transition. "I haven't started that yet. It starts in July, haven't read it yet," she explained, jokingly adding: "I'm going to play her Welsh."

Tobias Menzies will become the new Prince Philip, Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret, Jason Watkins will be former Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Josh O'Connor will step into Prince Charles's shoes.

Also, it was recently announced that Ben Daniels would replace Matthew Goode as Lord Snowdon.

Season 3 will start filming in July, and the plan is for the show to run for a further three, so as to cover the Queen's entire life.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said: "This is going to take Queen Elizabeth from age 29 to, presumably, the current day. We'll see it lay out over decades.

"The idea is to do this over six decades in six seasons presumably, and make the whole show [run] over eight to 10 years."

The Crown series three comes to Netflix in 2019.
