Erykah Badu feuds with Surviving R Kelly director Dream Hampton after singer's controversial Chicago speech

Erykah Badu and director Dream Hampton have clashed over Twitter, after Badu denied reports that she refused Hampton’s offer to appear in the docuseries Surviving R Kelly.

Hampton, the Lifetime series producer who previously claimed Badu was asked to participate in the documentary, confronted Badu after her controversial “prayer” for the R&B singer during a concert in Chicago over the weekend.

Badu later tweeted that she has “never” worked with Kelly, “don’t know him personally and was never asked to be a part of the documentary”.

Hampton then asserted that Badu was asked to be in the documentary due to her praise of Kelly at the 2015 Soul Train Awards. As the award show host, Badu introduced Kelly to the stage for his performance as her “brother” and said he “has done more for black people than anyone”.

Badu demanded an apology from Hampton, to which the director responded: “Are you kidding? Again, you PUBLICLY said he did more for black people than anyone? If you want to apologise for that, fine, apology accepted, on behalf of Harriet and the whole crew. What you meant by calling him your brother from the stage, I’ll never know...”

Surviving R Kelly details the multiple allegations of sexual, psychological and physical abuse of women and underage girls levelled against Kelly. He denies all of the accusations.

Since the documentary aired, artists including Phoenix, Lady Gaga and Chance the Rapper have apologised for working with Kelly in the past.

Both Gaga and Celine Dion have removed their Kelly collaborations from streaming services. According to reports, Kelly has been dropped by his labels RCA and Sony.
