The ES Shopping Shortlist: What to shop, see and know in November

It’s beginning to feel a lot like… the month before Christmas.

Perhaps it’s the clocks changing, maybe it’s the sudden need for a scarf over a coat, but this time of year always feels full of potential - especially when you cast your mind back to 12 months ago when most of the country was still in lockdown.

Some say that the pleasure of anticipation is often better than the actual thing you’ve been waiting for. We’re not entirely sold on that (especially when it comes to Christmas), but we can categorically say that this month has plenty of excitement in-store.

November may as well be renamed ‘Sales Season’ - it’s when the biggest shopping event of the year takes place. Yes, we’re talking about Black Friday - a weekend of sales which will kick off on November 26 and finish with fireworks-worthy discounts on Cyber Monday, November 29. Regular readers will know here at ES Best we always lay on a feast of fantastic discounts so you can make your money work harder (helpful with Christmas just around the corner). Spare yourselves the IRL ordeal and shop everything from the comfort of your sofa.

Before the bargain bonanza kicks off, big brands and retailers are falling over themselves to present new launches, services, collections and promotions designed to help you part with your money in the most pleasurable way.

Whether you’re shopping with a goal in mind or just fancy a spot of self-treating, November’s Shortlist offers tons of inspiration.

Clean up with Net-A-Porter x Reflaunt

Got a wardrobe packed full of clothes but still have nothing to wear? We hear you. Now you can resell unloved threads with Net-A-Porter x Reflaunt’s new service.

It allows you to rid your wardrobe of surplus shoes, bags, jewellery and clothing and be paid via bank transfer or with Net-A-Porter store credit - with an additional 10 per cent added if you choose this option to make it more enticing.

You won’t need to spend hours listing your for sale items either - simply gather your stuff into a bag and wait for Reflaunt to collect it. They’ll handle everything else; all you need to do is wait for the cash to start flooding in.

FRAME launches denim that won’t cost the earth

The blaming finger is often pointed at fashion for wasteful production that ends up choking the Earth. Now fashion label FRAME is looking to turn the tide with a groundbreaking denim collection that won’t leave a mark on the planet. The collection uses 100 per cent Tencel threads to stitch denim together - these will degrade with the fabric. Metal rivets and buttons are replaced with embroidered ‘drivets’, among other inspired Earth-saving swaps.

Toy subscription service Whirli makes sustainability child’s play

Toy shopping can be one heck of a task, and while we love to see their little faces light up with joy, the truth is, kids often move onto the next big thing before they’ve even properly torn off the wrapping paper off the first.

With our awareness of personal consumption at an all-time high, Whirli is a new toy subscription service designed to curb clutter (and ease landfill burden) while keeping your kids playing with amazing toys.

Riffing off the dress rental model, Whirli gives kids new toys to play with, and exchange them for fresh ones when they’re done. It means dolls, trucks, books and games continue to be played with long past their typical life cycle at no extra cost to you - or the planet.

And, if your little one loves it, they can keep it. You can gift parents either a subscription or buy them a selected toy from the site that they can later trade in for Whirli tokens.

From £9.99 a month, and suitable for ages 0 - 8.

Welcome to House Smedley

British knitwear brand John Smedley has unveiled tartan for the first time in its 237-year history. The print uses the royal warrant holder’s signature colours and all scarves in the series have been made in an artisanal mill in the Scottish Highlands before being formalised by the Scottish Tartan Registry - check, check, check.

The scarves come in a lavish array of hues, from the traditional red, blues and greens, to a rave-worthy neon yellow that could probably stop traffic.

The Merino wool scarves are £115 and the Cashmere scarves are £270.
