I was devastated when Roger Federer decided to take six months off to recuperate fully from injuries that had blighted the latter stages of his career. Mainly because I wanted to watch Federer, but also because I felt that would be the end. But his comeback to win Wimbledon was simply amazing.
There is no one in tennis quite like him. His unique style of backhand reflects his classy, elegant method of playing.
That’s why, even against all 6ft 6ins of Marin Cilic, he was able to make him look ever so small on the court. Even if Cilic was carrying an injury, I was certain the match was over before it had even begun.
To win Wimbledon once or even twice is a massive achievement; to do it eight times is extraordinary. Federer didn’t drop a set throughout the entire tournament, and all at the age of 35.
Without doubt, he is the best player ever to grace the court.
