I was touched watching Rio Ferdinand’s moving documentary on the BBC about losing his wife Rebecca to breast cancer.
Ferdinand made a brave decision to share the painful experiences he went through after her tragic death, talking about how he has had to take on the role of both mother and father to his children.
After the programme I wondered how many other fathers are in a similar position and whether there is readily available support for grieving fathers to help them cope.
The statistics show that suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 45. Perhaps more needs to be done to provide an outlet for men and women who are struggling to deal with the loss of their partner?
I hope that Ferdinand’s courage and the recognition he has received will not only see more support provided but also encourage more fathers to talk about their own struggles with single parenthood.
