Escape to the Country buyer issues four-word reply after spotting ‘deal breaker’

Escape to the Country viewers saw Alice and Dave on the hunt for their perfect Gloucestershire home on Wednesday afternoon as they wanted to be closer to family after becoming grandparents for the first time.

The couple decided to uproot from their Hampshire home, as Alice was also looking to retire from her time as a Vicar. Explaining another reason to move, she told BBC viewers: "It's custom when you stop leading a church that you move out of the area to give the new person a space to create their own vision, so I'm ready to go."

With a healthy budget of £650,000, the couple were looking for a two-bedroom home with a garage and garden for their two dogs.

Kicking off the search in Eastcombe, Sonali Shah impressed the couple with the first property as Dave confessed he was almost "speechless".

Sadly, things quickly went downhill from there as the other two homes failed to impress. The second property, located in Randwick, seemed to capture Alice who loved the location of the home.

Although Dave was less enthused, as he commented: "I don't particularly like the front door, to be honest, I would probably want to change that if I moved here."

Inside, the BBC host allowed them to explore the upstairs area by themselves to see what they made of the rest of the property. However, it wasn't long before Alice spotted something she couldn't overlook.

She told her partner: "One of the things I've already clocked about this house is there's no downstairs loo. If you've got visitors to a house, you don't want them all traipsing upstairs to use the loo."

Agreeing, Dave commented: "No, that is a problem."

Downstairs, it seemed as though Sonali could overhear their conversation as she addressed their issue to viewers.

She said: "They've noticed the lack of a downstairs loo, which I understand is a deal breaker for many. The thing is, they do have some space to build one out there, are they up for that challenge?"

However, when they were in the garden space outside, they pointed out the large amount of work needed to maintain it, along with the lack of fencing for their dogs.

Alice told the BBC star: "The initial impression of the house is, 'Oh wow!' It's a big Cotswold stone, symmetrical house. But, it's got things that I don't want to take on. The garden being one of them."

Dave agreed, replying: "The fact there's not a downstairs toilet."

As the episode drew to a close, they decided none of the homes were quite right for them and were going to continue their search.

Later, a voiceover of Sonali revealed they put in an offer on a thatched cottage hours after the cameras stopped rolling which they had previously seen.

Escape to the Country continues weekdays on BBC One from 3pm.
