An escaped peacock is ‘terrorising’ a village with residents left cowering indoors.

The runaway – nicknamed Percy – is on the loose in Estover, on the outskirts of Plymouth, Devon, and has already charged at one villager who attempted to capture the bird.

Resident Tonie Coe said: “He is very fast and very clever – he charged at me and flew over me which caused me to nearly slip. It could have been on You’ve Been Framed.”

She said she tried to phone a local veterinary practice to ask for advice but the woman who answered laughed when she heard the story of the peacock and referred her to the RSPCA.

She added: “She advised me to phone up the RSPCA, she didn’t know what to say, apart from contact 101.”

Tonie said she logged the incident with the police, but she was told that officers could not do anything unless Percy started obstructing the road.

Other residents of Estover, on the outskirts of Plymouth, reported being disturbed by the peacock’s distinctive call on Monday evening.

Percy was last photographed on Tuesday in a back garden a few streets from where he outsmarted Toni.

Kate Reynolds said her mother looked out of the window at 8am on Tuesday and saw Percy standing on her garden shed.

“She couldn’t believe it,” said Kate.

Percy is believed to have escaped from Nearby Poole Farm.

Staff and volunteers are searching for Percy, but he is still evading capture.

They asked residents to report recent sightings.
