Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off welcomed its contestants for this year’s series last night - and one made an hilarious jibe after one of the judge's didn't like his bake. Among the hopefuls is one man representing Essex - car mechanic, Andy.

The long awaited baking show started last night, bringing 12 new bakers to the Bake Off tent. Hoping to make his mark on judges Dame Prue Leith, and Paul Hollywood, family man is Andy, 44, from Essex who is stepping up to the worktop, ready to show them what his mum taught him.

The Essex Car mechanic was first brought into the world of baking thanks to his mum, who showed him how to make home comforts like apple crumble and Bakewell tarts, carefully using unused pastry not wasting one bit. His love of baking continues to be a family treat, making sure to treat his partner, Nikki, and daughter, Masie– who he hopes will be inspired, like he was with his mum.

Contestants faced their first round of challenges last night, with one being an elevated version of their signature loaf cake. Andy joked on last night’s launch show “Paul don’t like one of my bakes, so I’m going to jack up his car, take off his wheels, make a few quid– happy days!”

The Great British Bake Off continues on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8pm.
