A fish and chip shop just metres from Essex's Sunshine Coast is fighting to be crowned the UK's best. Forty of the UK’s best fish and chip shops are preparing to 'batter' it out to be named Takeaway of the Year at the National Fish & Chip Awards.

The Hook of Clacton hopes to be crowned as the best catch of the year but faces stiff competition nationally. Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the awards provide the opportunity for chippies to showcase their talents.

Experts will judge the takeaways before eventually crowning the ultimate chippy. The awards is in it's 37th year and puts the spotlight on businesses and individuals throughout the UK.

The Hook of Clacton can be found in the north Essex coastal town of Clacton just a matter of metres from Martello Beach and Clacton Pier. It's very well rated online with customers often praising their service and food.

Lee Anderson said on Google Reviews: "Dropped in for fish and chips after seeing that the reviews were high. Have to say that we all really enjoyed our meals.

"We ate outside as we have a dog and the fish and chips were cooked fresh and were delicious, very good portions and the best I have had in Clacton. There is an eating in restaurant and plenty of room outside. I will definitely return and recommend."

David Hatcher added: "Wow,what can I say. This is the best fish and chips I have had in years. We had Large Cod and chips for the two of us and a pot of tea each.

"The chips were so nicely cooked and a good portion as well, the cod was the star of the dish and cooked so well the batter was so crispy and not greasy at all and it covered most of the plate. It was definitely good value for money.

"The service was excellent and quick and there nothing that they couldn't do for you. The restaurant was clean and tidy and busy which shows you had good it was. When we are back in the area we will be in again for the best fish and chips I have tasted in a very long while. Keep up the good work guys."

The winners of the National Fish and Chip Awards will be announced on February 26 next year at the Park Plaza Hotel in London.
