Essex gets Storm Bert Met Office weather warning with 'power cuts likely' from strong winds
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning of wind for Essex and the wider south east of England as Storm Bert continues to cause disruption, with likely traffic disruption and power cuts. The warning states that delays are likely on road, rail, air and ferry transport.
The weather warning is in place between 8am on Sunday November 24 and 9pm. The forecaster adds that some short term power cuts are also possible, with probable delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.
The weather from Storm Bert has already caused disruption and cancellations to events in Essex this weekend, including the Chelmsford Christmas lights switch-on event planned for this evening (November 24).

The Met Office stated: "South to southwesterly winds will be strong and gusty throughout Sunday, easing from the west through the afternoon and early evening as a band of heavy rain associated with a weather front clears eastwards. Gusts of 45-55 mph widely with a few exposed sites, mainly over high ground and along south facing coasts seeing a few gusts of 60-65 mph.
"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
"If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
Thousands of homes were without power on Saturday as strong winds tore down power lines. Northern Powergrid said 27,000 customers were affected in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. In a post on X on Saturday evening, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “My thoughts are with all those affected by Storm Bert.
“For those who have lost power, my department will be keeping in close touch with the energy companies as they seek to ensure it is restored as swiftly as possible and help those affected.”
