An Essex man who has found joy in giving happiness to the community by doing some amazingly extravagant Christmas lights has returned to Southend for another year. Peter Edgson, who lives in The Grove in Southend, has been doing huge light displays for over 20 years to raise money for different charities.

Arguably, his house could be considered among the most Christmassy in Essex with a whopping 48,000 lights. He does not just switch on his lights and have done with it, though - he makes it a whole switch-on event with sweet treats and drinks for the community.

This year, Greggs donated lots of goodies for the event, and Peter provided hot chocolates - the proceeds of which all went to Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. Peter has changed from normal static lights to pixel lights in 2024, because he can program them to music - with a light show performed on the switch on event last weekend (November 24).

If you are worried you missed the main event, don't worry - Peter's bright festive lights will be on every night from 4-9pm. The lights are absolutely fantastic, too, and can't be underrated. The extraordinary light display features 18,000 on the house, and another 30,000 in the matrix.

Peter spoke to EssexLive about why he decided to go "out there" for his Christmas decorations each year. He said: "I make the switch on an event to bring the community together and give people something to look forward to. We should all try and help each other as and when we can. It's the way it should be - we do this to bring happiness to the community."
