Essex seaside spot named one of the best places to retire in Britain
One major coastal city in Essex has been ranked among the best places in the UK to retire. Known for its famously long pleasure pier, at 1.34 miles, its adventure park, green spaces, and coastal walks, Southend-on-Sea has scored a spot in the UK’s top ten places to retire to, coming in at number 7.
According to Moneypenny, which looked into which areas of the UK would be idyllic places to end your working life and start living your actual life, Southend-on-Sea is a place to consider putting your feet up.
Considering eight different factors which make a place the go-to place to live when starting your life of relaxation, Southend came up tops. Moneypenny considered eight important categories to find out what the perfect spot would be across the UK. Based on several factors that included the average cost of living, retirement savings needed, and variety of amenities, Southend made it onto the list.

Considering hobbies that many people take up when they retire, Moneypenny took into account the amount of green space in the area, as well as the number of fitness clubs, cafes, and golf courses. Southend has a hub of over 100 cafes, and 29 golf courses and 23 fitness centres, making it a prime location.
Ian Marshall, Group Head of Digital at Moneypenny, commented on the study, saying: “We understand that retirement is more than just relaxation. By considering factors such as cost of living, green space, and variety of amenities, we hope to provide a guide that helps retirees find a location that meets their lifestyle preferences and ensures a fulfilling and well-earned retirement.”
