EU threatens post-Brexit sausage trade war against UK

Brussels is threatening a sausage trade war with Britain if Prime Minister Boris Johnson overrides the Brexit treaty to allow Northern Ireland to keep selling British sausages. During the post-Brexit grace period, Northern Ireland is allowed to receive and sell chilled meats, such as sausages and mince, from Great Britain. This deal will end on June 30th. However, Johnson is reportedly considering unilaterally extending grace periods under the protocol due to lack of progress. The UK government extended grace periods on supermarket goods and parcels earlier this year. Maroš Sefčovič, a European Commission vice-president, warned that the EU would act “swiftly, firmly and resolutely to ensure that the UK abides by its international law obligations”. Officials will meet on Wednesday in London to try and resolve tension surrounding the post-Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol.
