European Commission Proposes 30-Day Ban on 'Non-Essential Travel' to EU

The European Commission (EC) on March 16 recommended a “temporary restriction on non-essential travel” to the European Union (EU) for 30 days, and the creation of “fast lanes” for the transportation of food, medical supplies and personnel.

In a video message, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said it was “vital to keep the mobility sector going, in order to ensure economic continuity.” She said medical personnel and people transporting goods would be exempt, as well as people who commute to work across European borders.

Von der Leyen added that she would be developing a “temporary framework for state aid” for all EU member states that would allow for “the provision of state aid at unprecedented levels,” and enable businesses to “access liquidity for the coming months.” Credit: Ursula von der Leyen via Storyful
