European Gas Conference Met With Protests in Vienna

Large protests against the European Gas Conference took place in Vienna on Tuesday, March 28, a day after 142 people were arrested during clashes with police.

Video shared by @TC_imWandel shows crowds gathered outside St Stephen’s Cathedral, which is located on Stephansplatz. The crowd sung and waved banners, including one which read “Solidarity Not Pipelines”.

The previous day, Amnesty Austria accused police of proceeding “very aggressively” and of using pepper spray and batons “disproportionately” during clashes outside the city’s Kursalon Hubner music hall. Footage circulating online shows the clashes on the city’s Johannesgasse.

In total, 142 people were arrested during the clashes on March 27, according to multiple local news reports, citing law enforcement.
