European terror attacks have happened on average almost every two months since 2015

The Manchester terror attack is sadly just the latest in what is an increasingly regular occurrence in Europe.

Over the past two years, frequent attacks have taken place on European soil – at an average of nearly every two months.

The blast at the Manchester Arena, that killed at least 22 people – including several children and young people – is one of the deadliest acts of terror in the continent since April 2015.

Attacks have included bombs, shootings and vehicles running people over, with Islamist terrorists responsible for the majority of them.

ISIS have claimed responsibility for the latest incident in Manchester, although that cannot be verified so far.

Villejuif, France – 19 April, 2015

Algerian jihadi Sid Ahmed Ghlam shot and killed a woman in her car before shooting himself in the leg, telling police he was the victim of an attack himself. However, police arrested him after finding weapons in his car before finding terrorist materials at his home. Ghlam was believed to be planning an attack churches in Paris.

Paris, France – 13 November, 2015

Nine Islamic State attackers unleashed a series of coordinated attacks on the French capital, targeting football matches, restaurants, cafes and music venues. In total, 130 people were killed, including 89 at the Bataclan theatre, where music fans were watching rock band Eagles of Death Metal.

Brussels, Belgium – 22 March, 2016

Suicide bombers killed 32 people at Brussels Airport in Zaventem and Maalbeek metro station in central Brussels. The bombers were part of the cell responsible for the Paris attacks. The bombings were the deadliest act of terrorism in Belgium’s history.

Magnanville, France – 13 June, 2016

Police officer Jean-Baptiste Salvaing died after being stabbed nine times by his neighbour Larossi Abballa, who shouted “allahu akbar”. The terrorist then took Salvaing’s wife and their son hostage in their house before killing Salvaing’s wife. Police later killed Abballa and rescued the boy.

Nice, France – 14 July, 2016

Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel killed 86 people when he drove a 19-tonne truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day. Police shot and killed the terrorist, who was working for Islamic State.

Normandy, France – 26 July, 2016

ISIS terrorists Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean, both 19, killed a French priest in a small church in Normandy. They also critically wounded an 86-year-old man before being killed by police.

Berlin, Germany – 19 December 2016

Tunisian asylum seeker Anis Amri ploughed a truck into a Christmas market in the German capital, killing 12 people, including the truck driver whose vehicle was used. Amri was shot dead four days later in Milan by armed police. He was given his instructions by ISIS and had filmed a video pledging allegiance to the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

London, United Kingdom – 22 March, 2017

Khalid Masood ploughed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before attempting to break into the House of Commons. He was shot and killed by armed police after he fatally stabbed Pc Keith Palmer. Masood, who was believed to be taking revenge for Western military action in the Middle East, killed five people in his rampage.

Stockholm, Sweden – 7 April, 2017

Five people were killed when the suspect, asylum seeker Rakhmat Akilov, hijacked a truck and mowed down crowds down a busy shopping street before crashing into a department store.

Paris, France – 20 April, 2017

Islamic State fighter Karim Cheurfi shot three police officer in Paris, killing one on the Champs-Élysées. He was shot dead before he could attack any more people.

Manchester, United Kingdom – 22 May, 2017

An unidentified suspect blew himself up at the Manchester Arena after an Ariana Grande concert. He killed 22 people, including several children and young people and is one of the worst terrorist attacks in the UK.
