Euston station will be closed for three weekends in a row threatening travel misery for tens of thousands

Tens of thousands of commuters have been told to avoid Euston Station for three weekends in a row as planned engineering works will close the station.

The station will be shut on weekends beginning August 18, August 25, and September 1 which includes the August Bank Holiday.

The central London transport hub is the main gateway to the North and midlands via Virgin Trains and London Northwestern railway services.

Engineering works on the West Coast route will mean that there will be no service from the station on those dates.

Passengers have been urged to avoid all but essential rail travel to and from London over these weekends.

Peter Broadley, executive director for customer, operations and safety at Virgin Trains on the west coast, said: “With no services into or out of Euston we strongly advise our customers to avoid travelling to London on the days affected.

“We know this will impact on people’s travel plans, particularly over a Bank Holiday weekend so to make it easier we are lifting peak restrictions on the Fridays before these dates from 9.30am for the whole day.”

The works are part of an ongoing improvement scheme from Network Rail to replace signalling and lineside equipment and lay new track.

Parts of the improvements will include upgrading North Wembley junction which requires shutting the entire line.

The company said it hopes that the improvements will make the route more reliable and robust.

Customers have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and expect busier trains and diverted routes.

Martin Frobisher, managing director for Network Rail’s London North Western route said: “There is never an ideal time to shut the railway but these three weekends are the least disruptive times to do it.

“We have worked together for the past three years with train operators to carefully plan this closure of the railway in a way that minimises impact on customers.

“It’s vital the track at north Wembley is replaced to continue to safely meet the huge demand of passenger and freight rail services on the West Coast main line. This work will result in better, more reliable journeys in future.”
