Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2018: The Inheritance star Kyle Soller says the show should go to Broadway

Star of The Inheritance Kyle Soller has said that the show should be heading across the pond soon.

The actor is on the shortlist for the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor in partnership with Ambassador Theatre Group, the winner of which will be announced at tonight’s ceremony.

Soller spoke on the red carpet about starring in Matthew Lopez’s play. Asked if there could be life for the show on Broadway, Soller said: “Hell yeah! This play needs to live in New York.”

The Inheritance is up for two other awards at tonight’s ceremony: Best Play in partnership with Chanel and the Milton Shulman Award for Best Director, for which Stephen Daldry is nominated.

Soller said that his first reaction to Lopez’s script was “a swear word I’m not allowed to say right now probably” adding that he read the first page repeatedly for 24 hours and “laughed and cried more than I ever have from reading a novel or watching a film or reading a script”.

The Inheritance is a two part play with an overall run time of around seven hours. He said that being involved has “changed my life”.

“I’ve never been part of something that’s had such a profound impact on people and also speaks for such an incredible community and is bringing people together from different generations and different walks of life.”

Joining Soller on the shortlist for best actor are Bryan Cranston for Network, Ralph Fiennes for Antony and Cleopatra, Ian McKellen for King Lear and Colin Morgan for Translations.

He says that he was drawn to London’s theatre scene by the talent he is up against for the award, saying: “It’s part of the reason I came to train in this city is the amazing pedigree of actors that have come out of London theatre. It’s the best in the world, it’s incredible.”

Actor and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge is presenting this year’s Evening Standard ceremony. Claire Foy and Idris Elba are co-hosting alongside Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour and the Evening Standard’s owner Evgeny Lebedev.

The awards are held in association with fashion label and official platinum partner Michael Kors.
