A free and inclusive event especially for parents of children and young adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will take place on Wednesday at Grimsby Town Hall.

Organised by the North East Lincolnshire Parent and Carer Forum (NELPCF) - a group run by six local volunteers who each have their own children with different disabilities - the annual event will be held from 9.30am to 2pm on Wednesday, September 25.

The day is designed to showcase the variety of help, support and activities available out there for parents of children and young people, aged between 0 and 25, with SEND. It will include an array of guest speakers, including the Neurodevelopmental Service, Early Years Team, Preparing for Adulthood Team and Abbie, who was diagnosed with autism later in life.

Kayleigh Broderick, who helps to run the North East Lincolnshire Parent and Carer Forum, told Grimsby Live: "I think it will be a wonderful opportunity to let people in our area know who we are and what support is out there and actually that there is support out there for parent and carers and families of children and young people with SEND.

"We're a small but mighty team of six parent and carer volunteers who all have our own children with different disabilities, neurodiversity and needs. We work very hard for our parents, carers and families in our community feeding back to the local authorities through regular, fortnightly meetings. We also have meetings with many different services such as the Neurodevelopmental Service, Carers Support Centre, the Preparing for Adulthood team and many more.

"We strive for better in our area regarding communication and gathering the correct information, working through, along and around the pros and cons of the SEND world both professionally and personally. We also put on free events for our parents and carers and their families, as well as attending many different events.

"We have a lot of exciting new ventures and projects for the future as NELPCF, to be able to do more for our parents, carers and families in our community. NELPCF has now become a community interest group (CIC) which will hopefully enable us to raise more money to be able to do more for the community, get involved in more projects and offer different workshops."

The special event will also include performances by the Littlecoates Primary School Makaton Choir. Reps will also share their personal experiences of autism, selective mutism and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
