Everton 0-0 Tottenham LIVE! Holgate sent off - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Everton vs Tottenham LIVE!

Antonio Conte’s first Premier League game in charge of Tottenham ended in a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Chances were at a premium in the first half following an early Ben Godfrey effort that was pushed away by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Everton thought they had won a penalty just after the hour when Richarlison was brought down by Lloris, but the decision was overturned by VAR.

Demarai Gray spurned a good chance for the Merseysiders before Giovani Lo Celso hit a post for Tottenham.

Toffees substitute Mason Holgate was sent off 10 minutes after coming on for a high challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but Everton held on to break a run of three straight Premier League defeats.

Conte has only had a few days to work with his players and kicked off his tenure with a 3-2 win over Vitesse in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, but this was a real gauge of the task at hand for the Italian.

FT: Everton 0-0 Tottenham

15:55 , Matt Verri

It’s not to be for either side.

Game had periods where it burst into life, but on the whole there wasn’t a huge amount of quality in an attacking sense from either side.

Everton end their losing streak, and Conte gets a point and a clean sheet to mark his Premier League return.

15:53 , Matt Verri

94 mins: Well then, Everton have a corner now.

Surely not...

15:52 , Matt Verri

93 mins: Terrible delivery, what a waste.

Everton then try to fly forwards, but Skipp brings a swift halt to that. Yellow for the Spurs man.

15:51 , Matt Verri

92 mins: Free-kick is a really good from Lo Celso... flicked behind by the Everton defender.

Corner Spurs.

One last chance to win it?

RED CARD - Holgate 90'

15:50 , Matt Verri

He’s off!

Has only been on the pitch a matter of minutes, but Mason Holgate is off.

15:49 , Matt Verri

Referee is checking this actually, Holgate could be in a bit more trouble.

He cleared the ball, but in his follow-through he has caught Hojbjerg high with his studs showing.

Yellow Card - Holgate 89'

15:48 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Digne does brilliantly to flick away a cross, as Tottenham bodies came flying in at the far post.

It’s all Spurs now, and Everton are desperately hanging on.

Holgate into the book after catching Hojbjerg, and Spurs have a dangerous free-kick.

Yellow Card - Ndombele 87'

15:46 , Matt Verri

87 mins: The Frenchman is into the book, and it’s a pretty pointless one. He picks up the ball and jogs away with it after Everton win a free-kick.

Spurs break... Lo Celso picks it up, cuts inside, shoots... HITS THE POST!

Brilliant effort from outside the box, and it’s so unlucky.

15:44 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Holgate makes his presence felt soon after coming on, fouling Skipp.

Lo Celso with a lovely ball out wide to Ndombele, who has just come on for Son, but Coleman blocks the cross.

15:40 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Closest we’ve come to a goal for a long time, and it’s Everton who very nearly take the lead.

Digne and Davies combine nicely on the left, and the Frenchman fires a low cross into the box. Gray gets on the end of it, but he can only divert his effort just wide of the far post.

Allan off, Holgate on for the hosts.

15:39 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Spurs look to have maybe withstood the Everton onslaught, following that penalty incident.

They’re growing into it late on. Son works the space for a cross, but it floats straight into the arms of Pickford.

15:36 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Tottenham launch the counter-attack, but Kane overhits his through ball to Son.

That was a decent chance, with Son comfortably having the pace to get away from Keane.

15:34 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Allan with a lovely ball over the top to Richarlison, who has got goal side of Dier. The Brazilian can’t quite bring it down though, and it bobbles through to Lloris.

15:32 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Game becoming increasingly stretched. Coleman has the chance to shoot on his left foot, but he tries to work it back onto his right and is closed down.

All Everton now, the home side really pushing for what you feel would be a winner.

15:29 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Son through on goal... drags it just wide. Doesn’t matter anyway, offside flag goes up. Correct decision for sure.

Reguilon off for Spurs, with Doherty on in his place. Lucas Moura also off, with Lo Celso replacing him.

Yellow Cards

15:27 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Emerson Royal did move his head into Richarlison’s face, but there wasn’t a huge amount of contact.

A yellow card for Richarlison, and also for Cristian Romero who got himself involved.

15:26 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Everton appealing for everything, and this is starting to boil over.

Richarlison screams for a handball... referee waves it away.

Now the Brazilian is on the ground, and the crowd are chanting “off, off, off.”

Dan Kilpatrick at Goodison Park

15:25 , Matt Verri

Goodison Park is furious after a replay of the penalty incident is shown on the big screen after Chris Kavanagh overturned his original decision. The atmosphere has been flat until now but that incident has sparked the stadium into life.

NO PENALTY

15:23 , Matt Verri

Wow. The Goodison faithful do not like that.

Chris Kavanagh decides the Spurs goalkeeper did get just enough on the ball.

The replay is shown on the big screen, and the crowd erupt in anger.

15:22 , Matt Verri

VAR checking this.

And now the referee is over to have a look at the pitchside monitor.

Did Lloris get a little touch on the ball?

PENALTY EVERTON!

15:20 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Everton have a penalty!

Richarlison brought down by Lloris who came flying out.

Dan Kilpatrick at Goodison Park

15:20 , Matt Verri

This increasingly feels like a game where one goal would be enough to win it for either side. Spurs feel the likelier to get it but they’re still lacking a final ball, and you wonder if Conte is starting to think about his bench.

15:19 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Strike!

Ben Davies receives the ball about 25 yards out, and decides to try his luck. Connects sweetly, but just swerves high and wide.

Townsend came flying in to try and block that, he knew that was dangerous.

15:18 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Lucas Moura down in the box again, and Michael Keane is in close proximity again. No foul though.

Davies now on for Delph. Been impressive today has the former Man City man, plenty of bite in the midfield.

15:16 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Gray shifts the ball inside onto his right foot and whips the cross in. Just too much on it though, and Lloris can claim as Townsend tries to get on the end of it.

Tom Davies coming on shortly, in place of Fabian Delph.

15:14 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Everton continue to look shaky defending set-pieces.

They fail to get a head on the corner, but fortunately for them so do Spurs.

15:14 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Spurs keep knocking it around in midfield, but it’s the final part of that process that’s proving problematic... creating any chances.

Kane tries to curl one out wide to Emerson Royal, but it’s cleared.

Reguilon cuts inside and and fires an effort towards the far corner. Could well have been going in, but Godfrey heads it away for a corner.

15:10 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Tottenham enjoying more time on the ball early in the second-half, but they haven’t been able to turn that into any real chances yet.

Delph and Allan are still snapping away in midfield, mopping up any loose balls.

Reguilon has huge space once again, and Kane is free in the box... but the ball in is straight at Pickford.

15:08 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Penalty? Free-kick? Neither!

Moura looks to have completely done Keane for pace on the right wing and drives inside... he goes down under contact, but the referee says nothing doing.

Everton then go up the other end and Gordon fires a volley over the bar.

15:05 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Poor defensive header from Keane very nearly allows Son to run through, but the defender makes up for it with a firm challenge.

Coleman backs it up moments later with a strong tackle himself. Everton fired up early after the break.

Players back out

15:03 , Matt Verri

Here we go then, players and managers are emerging back out onto the pitch.

Everton get us underway for the second period.

Frustrating half

15:01 , Matt Verri

Kane had some bright moments, with a couple of shots of his own blocked and then a brilliant cross to set up Reguilon’s chance late in the half.

But he hasn’t had a huge amount of service, with Tottenham struggling to build any sort of sustained pressure.

Plenty of room for improvement...

14:54 , Matt Verri

HALF-TIME: Everton 0-0 Tottenham

14:51 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time.

Most action came right at the end, with Reguilon’s chance, but apart from that there’s not been much to get excited about.

Stop-start first-half with all the fouls, and a lack of quality.

 (PA)
(PA)

14:47 , Matt Verri

45 mins: But Tottenham suddenly click into gear!

Son plays Kane in out wide, and he fires in a wonderful cross. So much pace on it, onto Reguilon’s foot... but as he stretches he can only fire it over the bar.

Had Kane been on the end of his own cross, it may well be 1-0 Spurs. As it is, still goalless.

14:46 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Tottenham enjoying some possession, but it’s only at the back and Everton are comfortable with letting that happen.

Neither side anywhere near their best from an attacking perspective so far.

14:43 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Richarlison down... Benitez could really do without that, considering the long injury list he already has to deal with.

Looks like it happened as he stretched to slow Royal down. Physio is on, and Richarlison is up. Will be ok to continue for now.

14:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Gray starting to come alive, and his ball into the box is a good one but there’s just too much pace on it for anyone to catch up.

Tottenham win it back and try to launch a counter-attack, but Richarlison is back to slow the visitors down.

14:40 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Brilliant from Gray, and he goes down claiming a penalty... waved away.

It was superb from the Everton winger initially, weaving his way past the Tottenham challenges and into the box where he was muscled off it by Skipp.

VAR check is over almost immediately, no penalty.

Dan Kilpatrick at Goodison Park

14:38 , Matt Verri

This is a game low on quality. Both sides have engineered good positions on the counter-attack in the last few minutes but fluffed the final pass.

14:38 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Corner cleared, and Gordon is offside as the ball comes back out wide.

Ten minutes to go into the first-half... it has not been the greatest half you’ll ever see.

14:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: The hosts should have made more of that.

Townsend got to the byline, but his cut-back is just behind Richarlison. It falls to Allan on the edge of the box, but he takes an age to do anything, and can only lay it off to Gray who sees his shot well blocked.

Everton are back on the attack though, and win a corner.

14:34 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Better from Everton. Allan with a nice floated ball into the box, but there’s not really enough pace on the ball and Richarlison can only flick the header well wide.

Tottenham had a bright five minutes or so earlier in the half, but it’s the hosts who have the better of it right now.

14:33 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Gordon has the ball for the first time in a while, and uses his body well to draw the foul from Reguilon.

The wing-back can’t afford too many more of those, after his early yello

Yellow Card - Delph 26'

14:27 , Matt Verri

26 mins: It’s a card each now.

Moura picks up the ball on the halfway line, turns, and starts to run at the Everton defence.

Delph comes sliding in and claims he won the ball - the referee thinks otherwise and shows the midfielder the yellow card.

14:26 , Matt Verri

25mins: Godfrey attempts the long pass to Gray... overhits it by about 40 yards.

Everton then win the free-kick after Royal catches Digne as he goes to close the left-back down.

Plenty of intensity from both sides, but not a huge amount of quality yet.

14:24 , Matt Verri

22 mins: First real chance of the match.

Kane does well to get it out wide to Reguilon, who is in all sorts of space on the left wing.

He crosses it in to the back post, right onto the head of Royal, who heads it over the bar. Cross in had evaded the defenders... Spurs man really should have done better.

Dan Kilpatrick at Goodison Park

14:21 , Matt Verri

Spurs are starting to get going after a slow start, with blocked shots for Lucas and Kane in the last few minutes. Everton are doing a good job of crowding out Spurs’ front three whenever they get on the ball.

14:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Kane this time tries his luck from 20 yards, but Keane is there. Moura plays in his captain, who lines up another effort but the Everton bodies come flying in once more.

Reguilon fouled by Gordon... it’s been a game with plenty of those so far.

14:19 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Nicely worked from Everton to get it out wide to Coleman, who cuts back inside. He plays it to Townsend, who clearly had a flashback to his Spurs days as he lays it off straight to a white shirt.

The visitors break with Lucas Moura who shows brilliant footwork to find some room for the shot, but Keane is across to block. End-to-end all of a sudden!

14:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: The crowd are really up for this, urging the Everton players into challenges.

Lloris has to be alert to come charging out of his goal and head a long ball away, with Richarlison lurking and waiting for any slip-up.

Yellow Card - Reguilon 12'

14:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: First yellow card of the match, and there can be no complaints.

Townsend was breaking away down the right wing, and Reguilon bundles into him cynically to bring him down. A long time to be playing on a yellow card for the left wing-back...

Dan Kilpatrick at Goodison Park

14:11 , Matt Verri

The levels of optimism at these two clubs feels very different given events of the past week and all the noise is coming from the Spurs fans in one corner of Goodison Park, who have already chanted more for Conte than they did in 17 games with Nuno.

But the first chances have gone to Everton, with Godfrey and Keane both going for goal.

14:10 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Son is down after Godfrey goes through the back of him.... the Spurs man is not happy at all.

Looks like Godfrey may have stood on Son as he stumbled forwards. A painful one, but he’s back up on his feet.

14:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Hojbjerg fouls Townsend, and Everton have a free-kick in a decent position about 30 yards out.

Gray lays it off to Delph, who floats it to the back post. Keane runs around the back of the Spurs line, and gets his head on it... he can’t quite divert it back across goal though.

Bright start from the Toffees.

14:07 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Allan plays it out to the left, where Demarai Gray has started the match and he is looking to run at Emerson Royal.

Ben Godfrey is allowed time and space in the Spurs half as he pounces on another loose pass. He brings it forward, Dier keeps backing off, so Godfrey lets fly from 25 yards.

Easy enough save for Lloris, but slightly worrying for Spurs how much space he had.

14:05 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Everton looking to press high early on, and Hojbjerg is very nearly caught on the ball on the edge of his box by Richarlison.

Spurs just about manage to play their way out, but the hosts are making it clear early on they won’t just be sitting off.

14:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Tottenham’s away fans in fine voice early on at Goodison.

Skipp gives the ball away with a loose pass and that gives Everton the chance to attack. Gordon whips in a cross, but there’s too much on it and Spurs can clear.

We’re off!

14:01 , Matt Verri

Tottenham get us underway!

Within 20 seconds they have a free-kick as Delph makes his mark early doors.

Almost time

14:00 , Matt Verri

The Last Post has been played, and now a minute’s applause in memory of Walter Smith.

We’re just about ready to get underway...

Teams about to come out...

13:58 , Matt Verri

Just a few minutes until kick-off now.

Everton really need a win, Conte and Tottenham would love to start this new era with a win.

Someone’s going to be disappointed....

Head-to-head

13:54 , Matt Verri

Everton are unbeaten in the last three meetings between the two sides at Goodison Park, including a 5-4 win in the FA Cup.

But in 2018, it was Tottenham who came out on top with a 6-2 victory. Kane and Son scored a brace each that day.

Let’s hope for another goal-fest this afternoon...

Last match before break

13:46 , Matt Verri

A chance for both sides today to go into the upcoming international break in high spirits.

For Spurs, a win could take them fifth in the table depending on how Arsenal do against Watford.

With matches against Leeds, Burnley, Brentford and Norwich to come after the break, Conte will be hoping to go on a good run early in his Tottenham career.

Looks like a chilly afternoon at Goodison...

13:40 , Matt Verri

Kane to thrive?

13:30 , Matt Verri

Harry Kane and the Tottenham team are out warming up at Goodison Park.

England manager Gareth Southgate believes the arrival of the “outstanding” Antonio Conte will get the best out of the striker “very quickly.”

Standard Sport’s Prediction

13:15 , Matt Verri

Everton away might appear a difficult first assignment back in the top-flight for Conte, but the Toffees - who conceded five at Watford last month - are reeling after four consecutive defeats and have problems all over the pitch.

Benitez will be desperate to avoid equalling his longest losing streak as a Premier League manager and has admitted that his side “have issues” as he pleads for patience among the Goodison faithful.

Tottenham proved against Vitesse they do have attacking firepower in abundance when confident and motivated, though their porous defence remains a big concern despite Conte’s swift formation shift.

Expect this game to be entertaining and high on goals, if not quite reaching the levels of the nine-goal FA Cup classic played out on the same ground back in February.

Everton 2-3 Tottenham.

Conte keeps the faith

13:11 , Matt Verri

So, Tottenham unchanged from the 3-2 win over Vitesse on Thursday night. Perhaps to be expected considering the short amount of time he has actually had with his team.

EVERTON LINE-UP

13:04 , Matt Verri

Everton XI: Pickford, Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Digne, Allan, Delph, Townsend, Gray, Gordon, Richarlison.

Subs: Begovic, Holgate, Kenny, Davies, Gbamin, Iwobi, Tosun, Branthwaite, Rondon.

TOTTENHAM LINE-UP

13:02 , Matt Verri

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Royal, Hojbjerg, Skipp, Reguilon, Lucas, Son, Kane

Subs: Gollini, Doherty, Sanchez, Tanganga, Winks, Alli, Bergwijn, Lo Celso, Ndombele

Big names still missing for Everton

12:50 , Matt Verri

Rafa Benitez is without key players Abdoulaye Doucoure , Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Andre Gomes, and Yerry Mina.

Lucas Digne is back in contention though, after missing the Wolves defeat with a muscle injury.

Summer signings Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray are expected to start again, with both enjoying impressive starts to the season.

Tottenham team news

12:42 , Matt Verri

Conte immediately switched to his preferred 3-4-1-2 system, which suits his Spurs squad, but he will not have been convinced by Spurs’ defending in the 3-2 win over Vitesse.

Eric Dier was at fault for the Dutch side’s first goal and nutmegged for their second, Cristian Romero was sent off for two reckless bookings and Ben Davies was fortunate not to concede an early penalty.

Japhet Tanganga, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez are all options in the back three, although the Colombian may be a doubt after finishing Thursday’s game with a Terry Butcher-style head bandage following a high Vitesse boot.

Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil remain sidelined but Conte is thought to have no other major injury concerns.

Tottenham predicted XI (probable 3-4-1-2): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Royal, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Reguilon; Lucas; Son, Kane.
