The sight of the Golden Arches should mean the expectation of a guaranteed experience. The idea being that wherever you are in the world on any continent, a visit to McDonald's should be a guaranteed dining experience.

Since their opening in 1974, they’re seemingly everywhere - from motorway service stations to the hearts of our largest cities. You probably know where the nearest one to your house is.

You also probably know which ones to hit and which ones to avoid. Which ones have the best play areas, which ones have the quickest drive-thrus, and which ones are pretty ropey on the food quality.

Here’s a list of the ones around Coventry and Warwickshire that serve the best and the worst of what the iconic chain has to offer, as decided by Tripadvisor.

Alvis Retail Park

Holyhead Rd, Coventry CV5 8BW

Overall Rating: 2/5

Food: 3/5

Value: 3/5

Service: 3/5

Inattentive staff, cold food, and a phone that doesn’t answer were all issues that customers claimed they had upon visiting this branch. Of 59 reviews, 41 gave it the lowest score, with most complaining about inattentive staff.

Writing last year, one said: “I was told the milkshake machine was broken, and when I asked for the money back for the 3 milkshakes I paid for, he just walked off and carried on with other orders.” Others also reported missing items that went unrefunded, even when ordered via Uber Eats.

Others criticised the interior of the restaurant itself, with one saying the experience was of “dirty seats and tables, extremely poor service, and cold food that is badly put together".

McDonald's Coventry City Centre

26 Cross Cheaping, Coventry CV1 1HF

Overall Rating: 2.5/5

Food: 2.5/5

Value: 2.5/5

Service: 2.5/5

City centre McDonald's branches can be interesting places, particularly at night. Coventry’s is no different, with many reviewers citing issues at the branch.

While reviews haven’t been piling in recently, one has stated that the store could be best described as “avoid unless desperate".

“There's always violence, fights, staff are rude especially the young lads on the till. Got no good word to say about this place - would have given it a 0 if I could,” one reviewer wrote.

Another stated that:"Everytime I visit this restaurant with my wife and children, there has always been an issue. For example, the food is missing or the food is stone cold.

"I will be visiting either the West Orchards or Binley McDonald's branches from now on.”

Binley McDonald's

Willenhall Lane, Coventry, CV3 2EA

Overall Rating: 2.5/5

Food: 3/5

Value: 3/5

Service: 3/5

Speaking of the Binley McDonald's, this branch has received much more favourable reviews in recent months. After a slew of poor reviews in previous years, something seems to have changed.

One said after buying a meal for their family “Best to order on the app - they get it right every time. Was served by a lovely friendly and helpful worker and will be back again. Great customer service.”

Another also reported “great customer service” and that staff “always have a smile on their faces.” What this means is that Binley may just be the place to get your Big Mac fix.

Walsgrave McDonald's

2 Wigston Road, Walsgrave, Coventry CV2 2RZ

Overall Rating: 2.5/5

Food: 3/5

Value: 3/5

Service: 3/5

While this McDonald's got reviews for food and the soft play area, it was the branch’s car park that drew the most ire. The car park has a 90 minute limit patrolled by a private company, with some customers saying their visit turned out to be rather more expensive than expected.

One parent, who left a review in June 2024, said “if you're thinking of booking a party here for your child's birthday, I'd ask you to think again.

“There's a 90 minute parking limit, but upon speaking to staff on shift, we were told to provide our registration so they could notify the private car parking company so we wouldn't receive a parking fine. We provided our reg, but this clearly wasn't done as less than 2 weeks later, we've received a parking fine in the post. £50 if paid within 14 days, £100 thereafter.”

Others cited a similar issue, with one asking to “extend the parking limit from 90 minutes to 2 hours” despite praising a “lovely atmosphere” with friendly staff and a good play area for kids. Others called it a “parking scam.”

“I met up with an old army friend here who I haven’t seen in 20 years. We had our food and sat talking about old times.

“We let our food go down then ordered another coffee and apple pie for dessert and when finished, we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways . Days later I got letters from the parking company demanding to pay a fine and then another final warning to pay £100.”

So while this branch might be a pleasure to visit for many, parking is something to be aware of, lest you get any unwelcome letters in the post.

Canley McDonald’s

Arlington Business Park, Tile Hill Lane, Canley, Coventry, CV4 9BJ

Overall Rating: 1.5/5

While there aren’t enough reviews to rate the other categories, this McDonald's in Canley is among the worst rated in the city by locals. The fast food branch, which is conveniently located just off the A45, has been widely panned by most visiting.

While reviews haven’t been left recently, one did say that they were “disgusted at the items we got” while another said it was “really hit or miss.”

“This is our local McDonald’s and we go quite often when in a rush for food as a family. However the last two times we have been there have been issues. The first time, I received undercooked slimy chicken selects. The second time, the chips were so greasy it was practically falling off of them.”

Others described the customer service as “miserable” and said items could be missed at the drive thru. In the end, it’s a case of whether the convenient location makes it worth any possible risk of sub-par food.

Foleshill McDonald's

Gallagher Retail Park, Stoney Stanton Road, Coventry CV6 5QE

Overall Rating: 1/5

This one scores even lower than Canley, with a mere one star. Cold food, unanswered phones, and a shortage of beef have all had punters fuming after coming here.

One even exclaimed “how can McDonald's run out of beef burgers?”

They went on to say: “I waited in the drive through patiently to order and when it gets to my turn got told they had no beef burgers. I then had to wait in the queue to get out. No warning signs for customers, just wasting people's time with their below par service.”

Others cited cold food, cold coffee, and inattentive staff. While the branch only has five reviews, none of them are glowing.

Unfortunately two McDonald's stand with no reviews at all - West Orchards Shopping Centre and the Abbey Park branch in Willenhall. Could this be that no news is good news?

Either way, Coventry is very hard on its McDonald's. But for the best of the bunch, Tripadvisor suggests Binley is the place to go.
