The owners and staff of a Surrey beauty salon have described their distress and upset after a fire tore through their shop in Walton early on Sunday morning (May 26). Harmony Nails and Beauty on the town’s high street now faces closure in the short-term and a rebuild bill expected to top tens of thousands of pounds.

The salon had only just gotten a refurbishment on April 12. Tiffany is one of seven colleagues at Harmony Nails and Beauty and claimed “we feel lost” at the thought of not being able to go to work, despite her having only been employed for three months.

Employee Tiffany said on behalf of boss Huong Nguyen: “It’s quite sad, we don’t know what to do. We can’t explain it. When I’d wake up in the morning, I’d be so excited to go to work and as soon as I got the text to say there’s no work today because the salon’s caught on fire, I didn’t believe it. I was really upset, and then when I saw the pictures, it’s really sad. It’s all destroyed.”

A gofundme fundraising page has been set up by the shop with a target of £25,000 due to fears the insurance claim could take between six and 12 months. Tiffany also worries it will take “way more” money than that.

She outlined: “It’s not possible that we want to ask all these people for that much money. Any donation is appreciated, but it’s going to take a lot more than that. All the products are still there but they’re not intact. They’re not useable - you cannot use any of the products that are in there. Everything in there is basically fried.

“We’re going to have to clean the whole place out and rebuild the whole thing again. It’s going to take a while and a lot of money as well.” The range of products stocked by Harmony Nails and Beauty was deemed to be wide and hard to find and was curated based on customers' needs and preferences.

It is thought an electrical fault may have caused the fire. The official cause has not yet been confirmed, however, and is still under investigation.

A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed: “We received a call on Sunday morning around 5.45am to a report of a fire on High Street, Walton-on-Thames. Two fire engines were sent, arriving at the scene around 5.50am.

“A fire had broken out on the ground floor of a retail property, causing approximately 11 to 20 sqm damage. The fire was tackled and crews left the scene around 7am.” A gofundme page has described everything in the store as “ruined” including chairs, desks, and the ceiling.

Huong Nguyen said: “We had only got the salon refurbished on April 12 and it looked lovely, we had also replaced a lot of things and ordered so many new colours to widen the variation. Me and my colleagues put our hearts and souls into this salon. We have owned this shop for nearly 8 years and are so devastated to see it all be taken away overnight.”

Harmony Nails and Beauty opened in Walton in April 2017. More than £750 has been raised for the family-run business in two days, according to gofundme.
