Everything you need to know ahead of Janey Godley's 'final Edinburgh journey'

Janey Godley will have her 'final Edinburgh journey' on Friday afternoon as the beloved Scottish comedian makes her last visit to Edinburgh.

The stand up comedian passed away earlier this month after a battle with ovarian cancer. During her career Janey spent a lot of time in Edinburgh, describing the city as her “beloved Festival home”.

Today she will say a final farewell to the city, with her coffin passing through the city centre.

A hearse carrying Janey’s coffin will begin its journey through the city from Lawnmarket at 2:30pm on Friday November 29. The coffin will continue down the Royal Mile towards St Giles Cathedral.

Janey will then proceed along Cockburn Street and Market Street before heading to Glasgow, ahead of her funeral on Saturday.

In a post on X, Ashley Storrie, Janey Godley’s daughter, shared the details of her mum’s final trip through Edinburgh, adding that everyone was welcome.

She said: "For the past few years of Ma's life, it was important to her that she shared her journey with everyone, to offer support for others on the same path and to highlight the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer - all of course in her very singular Janey style, with laughter and candour."

"So many of you who have travelled with us on this journey wish to bid her a final farewell, so here's the details of my mum's final tour, in the two cities she loved with all her heart."

Shirley Doig, Janey’s best friend, will accompany the coffin as it makes its way through Edinburgh, alongside a 100-strong female choir. At St Giles the procession will pause for reflection before a performance by the Sound House Choir.

On Saturday Janey Godley’s funeral will take place in her home city in Glasgow. The service will begin at 10am at St Mary’s Cathedral.

At 11:30am, the hearse and coaches will leave the Cathedral along Great Western Road towards the crematorium. A private ceremony will then take place at the crematorium.
